@NEETzsche. Is your point is that people shouldn't critique unless they write their own software / netstack solutions? This #mastodon instance we are using is evidence itself that people are taking action. #gemini is another example. There are tons of other examples. That said, I personally am happy to see people questioning and thinking critically about the software and protocols they use whether they are software authors or not. Too many people don't do this.

@danslerush I spent many quarters in an arcade that looked very close to that one, right down to the same carpet. ;-)

Interesting browser add on sponsored by #fsf to try and tame use of specific #javascript features to track users. Has anyone tried it yet?https://jshelter.org/

@Metruzanca There are apps such as Aegis, that allow you to back up your 2FA in case you lose your phone.https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.beemdevelopment.aegis/

@Metruzanca I use the setting in Aegis to create regular backups in a chosen folder on my phone. Then I also use #syncthing to automatically keep that folder mirrored to my personal server located at my residence. The other option is to connect your phone to your computer via USB cable and copy over the backup files manually.

@joeligj12 my comment is somewhat unrelated, but I'm glad to see more and more projects/links coming from #sourcehut. Its a great open source project in itself.

@frssoft Alternately you could use the "yes" command. https://winaero.com/how-to-create-100-cpu-load-in-linux/amp/

@hund @rudolf I think everyone agrees that avoiding malware is good practice. What @rudolf is referring to is malware that you have been unknowingly exposed to (which is the whole goal of malware). Powering off has some incremental benefit in reducing malware risk, but its only one of a number of things (prudent user choices, hardened os and settings, backups, monitoring, etc). Do as many of those as you can while striking the right balance with your particular risk scenario and ease of use.

@kev @hund @rudolf Fully agree if you have been infected by a persistent malware its game over and rebooting does nothing. There is a class of non persistent malware, hence why I mentioned incremental benefit to rebooting. If you have an OS that requires a reboot to fully update latest kernel, then that is probably the main security benefit to rebooting. Everyone has different risk profiles though, so to each their own.

I was looking forward to listening to the "Untold Stories of Open Source" podcasts from The Linux Foundation. Unfortunately they chose to use #spotify and I can't find any way to download it to listen offline in my car 🤬. I don't want a spotify account or their proprietary app. Why do these #opensource "advocates" keep using closed source solutions?!? Any suggestions anyone has to listen to these offline without a #spotify account?

@iron_bug and @graphito thank you very much for the replies and solutions. That worked. If the Linux Foundation wanted to reach a larger crowd they would do well to include at least one solution that was not proprietary (plain download link or rss on the main page). Wishful thinking I guess.

@someodd Open source it now, but spend time updating the README to make it clear what stage the project is in and where you could really use help/input etc.

@kyle I agree. Any potential benefit of theft prevention is far outweighed by the downside from loss of control. This isn't an Android only issue. Apple phones have the same problem.

@karson777 I'm not aware of a way to do that. I do know from the admin account you can choose to manage users and select apps in the admin account to install into other profiles, but that's probably not helpful for what you are trying to accomplish.
