I also really appreciated the ways that throughout the book, Staley introspects on the ways that his experiences were informed by privilege. He spends a lot of words reflecting on the mistakes he made and things he could have done better as an activist and as a person. It's a profoundly thoughtful book, while also being funny, entertaining, and more than a little raunchy :)

A thing that just clicked for me is that a lot of folks on here engaging in Discourse about search, federation rules, QTs etc are conflating abuse-resistant design with security by obscurity as if they are the same thing. Which they are not, and conflating the two makes conversations about them impossible.Shout out to @0xabad1dea for this post and subthread which helped me articulate this https://infosec.exchange/@0xabad1dea/109750422799949462#meta #fediverse #antiabuse #contentmoderation

I have a whole other post for a later date when I’ve had more sleep about how the concept of “conflicting accommodations” from #disability discourse can be useful as a lense in these conversations.Eg my #ADHD brain is a sieve memory-wise and searching the twitter timeline - both my own tweets, and the main unified TL - has been a major memory aid over the years.Even just being able to search the portion of the fediverse constituting “everything I’ve _personally_ seen” would be a huge usability boon for me. But I also get that forgetability is a feature others want. Conflicting accommodations!

Even when Twitter’s T&S infrastructure was at its most functional – which I’d say was 2021-mid 2022 – I sometimes saw appeals on content decisions, suspensions, etc. take 2-3 months unless I escalated to personal contacts at the company.I keep seeing folks expect #moderation and community management decisions on volunteer-run fedi instances to happen in hours – not even days – and jumping to defederation when they don’t get immediate responses. It’s going to burn out so many admins, and makes me sad and worried about the sustainability and scalability of our communities.#fediverse #fediadmin #contentmoderation #communitymanagement #mastoadmin #mastodon

Of the folks I interacted with on the bird site, I'm noticing these migration patterns:* #security peeps have mostly moved over here, primarily to infosec.exchange and a few to hachyderm or self-hosting* dev & #FOSS folks have migrated en masse, primarily to hachyderm and self-hosting* science fiction friends have mostly made the jump* journalists are a mix - lots of folks cross-posting and lots still posting "write-only" over there, but lots still engaging too* my #LGBTQ peeps are active in both places* disability advocacy friends are still over there; a few #ADHD peeps are over here* DEI type folks have depressingly mostly not moved here, but to LinkedIn* founders & VCs have almost entirely _not_ moved* housing/urbanist types mostly haven't moved, especially CanadiansCurious how that lines up with what others are seeing, especially among groups I haven't listed (those happen to be the groups I personally interact with – curious about your personal equivalents!)#twittermigration #fediverse

Hoping the fediverse can help out: I'm in touch with a Ukranian family in #Toronto who are trying to get their cat (named Milana, in photo) from #Kraków, #Poland to Toronto this spring. They can cover some transport costs but are trying to connect with someone already making the trip. Email milana at hypatia.ca if you can help. Please boost!#Ukraine #CatsOfMastodon #Canada

I think we can all agree that if Reddit’s recent bullshit ends up meaning people go back to running old school forums it’ll be the absolute funniest possible outcome

Folks who use Reddit - with the new year there’s always an uptick in weight loss ads, so I wanted to share something I just learned: you can disable “sensitive advertising categories” in your Reddit account/app settings - in the app, here’s how to do it:* go to your profile in the upper right hand corner* tap your username under the heading “account settings”* scroll down til you see the below options, and then disable whichever ones you don’t want to seeWishing everyone health and happiness in the new year - whatever that means to you, personally ❤️
