The reason this is deeply troubling is that it removes any advances that do not fit the far-right "it used to be better narrative". Although progress is not a straight arrow into the future (e.g. look at wage inequality over time since the 1980s) there have been large steps in history which have improved people's lives. I'm thinking of social and environmental justice movements and laws passed in this context. From the article this notion is erased.

@aral I've started bridging, because a large part of academia is on Bluesky - and some of it might apply. But I never check in there, they will need to come here so to say. My terms, federated. If you double fist you aren't doing it right I would argue. Also, I might pull the plug on in at some point.

It is possible to train LLM models without copyrighted materials. Although this effort by scientists lags current model performance, but is on par with 2023 models, it shows that it was possible back then (as much of the source material was available to them at the time). That's rather, well, dishonest.The fact that employees weren't paid in equity also doesn't pass honesty sniff test. There never was the intention to share financial success it seems. In short, they were conned big time leveraging "passion".
