@fitheach actually bought a fee 4G modems a while back intending to add sms-alerts to the homelab. Didn't realize some modems are more locked down than others... Still haven't cracked it, but one of these days...I think there are XMPP "bridges" and Mattermist has some as well. But yea, like you said, Matrix/Element is pleasant to use and interesting for a multitude of reasons so sticking with that for now. :)

@killyourfm @elementary Fantastic move! :)There is already support for adding a donations link / list of links to the snap itself when creating it. https://snapcraft.io/docs/snapcraft-top-level-metadataBut no subscription or such.

@82mhz ran a matrix server for a tiny company (2 full time employees with a frequently changing handful of freelancers and consultants). Matrix was easy to setup, integrate with SSO, and the Element client is very nice. Only hrdle was getting people to understand the need to keep a key backup / code for enrolling new clients. But that isn't a daily occurrence so... Think at this point it may be more "normal user " friendly than XMPP... Especially on the client side (IMO).

@quad kinda like Datatilsynet (Norwegian data protection agency). They pulled their FB page in 2021* (recommending other agencies do the same) and have fined the Labour Agency (unwarranted credit check of an individual) as well as Norwegian parliament (for inadequate security) when they were found in breach of laws.I think parts of the German state also stopped using FB?*) https://www.datatilsynet.no/en/news/2021/norwegian-data-protection-authority-choose-not-to-use-facebook/

Anyone know of a #FOSS #android app ala #pidgin that supports multiple chat protocols? Mainly looking for #XMPP and #Matrix with E2EE and room/group chat support... other protocols are a bonus. (Not asking for much am I... :blobnerd: )

@debacle @daniel @nicoco Its an idea, I certainly would love bridging everything. The E2EE issue is why I was thinking of a single app that could do multiple protocols. So would still have separate servers, with separate users, but have it collected in one place. Its not even about which protocol is "the one" (not interested in that atm). I just want to hang out with the FOSS communities split between them. Without having to use two clients.Lazy. I know. :blobcatcoffee:

Had my first brush with "AI" in the wild the other day. Went to my optician for the yearly check. Consultation started with a literal verbal disclaimer of "I am not an optician, I am a technician, all the questions are generated via AI and entered in an iPad. Our optician will review the results enabling us to service more clients."I have F'd eyes. So after half an hour the optician was summoned (from which ever windowless room/cage they keep them in) to re-run the tests./1

While waiting for the optician I had a chat with the technician. Whom is not interested in becoming an optician (so it is not a "using students to save money - though it might further their career" thing even). It is de-skilling. I now have to trust some LLM to interpret my eyes and not hallucinate the need for surgery (and trust it hasn't been instructed to aggressively up-sell, using the ignorance of the technician to suggest things that are not needed). /2

It is bad enough that I have to subscribe to a monthly service in order to get my glasses (GaaS - glasses as a service) or pay a large amount up front (buy-to-own prices have skyrocketed once they started offering GaaS) that I just don't have. Miss a payment? Guess I don't get to see clearly, drive a car, or read without a serious headache anymore./3

Late stage capitalism enshitification, it's here for your eyeballs. I once dreamt of 3D printed glasses (avoiding the insane markup at the store) but never found a way to get/mount the lenses./end

@stfn Hope you like it. Been planning to put it into my own lab for a while (then other things happen, magic smoke escapes, and suddenly it falls lower on the priorities list). Apart from the self hosting side, the integration with Shiori (my bookmarker/read-it-later/archiver program of choice) makes it sound fantastic. The encouraging reviews by Rachelbythebay also helps. Devs listened to the critique and fixed the "backend" that was harassing feed servers: https://rachelbythebay.com/w/2024/10/25/fs/ )

@stfn https://european-alternatives.eu/category/vps-virtual-private-server-hostersMight be a decent place to start? Been using Hetzner myself for about a year and a half. So far very happy. cheap and simple. No BS cost calculations etc.

Brain scratches for any #android droid enthusiasts out there:Phone does not connect to the phone network (no service).Put a different SIM (same carrier) in it, it works.Transfer the original (physical) sim to a new phone it works. Only the combination ofSIM1 and Phone1 does not work...I'm stumped.

@louis @m0bi @stfn If I remember right doesn't it fall back to routing if the NAT hole punch fails? Don't know why it would fail only some times though that may just be down to the instability of some inbetween network and the throw-it-over-the-hedge nature of UDP (which I seem to remember is used for the hole punching routine?)
