Hey #FediHire, do I know anyone in my network in the US who is either a senior/fairly experienced SRE, or a senior SDE interested in jumping to the ops side of the world, who is or could be in the market for a new, fully-remote, 4-day workweek gig working with Ruby/Rails, Rust, Terraform, cloud provider migration, etc?If I don't already know you to some degree, a link (DM'd is fine) to a resume or portfolio or personal website is a nice bonus.Happy to answer any q's you might have.

Per the Ship of Theseus conundrum, this boat is officially no longer Cara Mia. We've removed so much unnecessary shit that it's finally, officially, unrecognizable (guts wise) as the boat I bought, and becomes Cloudy Day Real Estate today.Unexpectedly dead fridge? Gone. About 100lbs of redundant (or already dead / going nowhere, or so old and corroded as to be unsafe) copper wires? Gone. Old radio? Coming out. All the old AC charge and inverter systems that my new setup makes redundant? GONE.

Longer term back of mind item: my current bulk data storage array is a ZFS mirror+special-mirror (2x 16TB spinners + 2x 1TB SSD) that was built in 2021. Moving aboard in winter will make spinning disks tricky (keeping them running 24/7 is simply not doable due to the swaying and rocking of a boat) meaning they'll have to be relegated to backup/ultra-high-latency/"cold" storage purposes (retrieval times up to a week, in horrible weather)So I now need to figure out a new "hot" bulk data store :|

My months long stint as a wannabe marine electrician has paid off.My DIY'd (from 16 raw LiFePO4 cells) 48VDC battery bank is powering CDRE's mast lights via the zoo of fuses, DC-DC converters, hand built breaker panel, and cacophony of new wiring.... and I didn't even have to break out the fire extinguisher.#theBoatyard, late night edition. Next wiring steps: nav lights, bilge pump, and the 48V electric motor.

She float. Had one packing leak, fixable in the water. Now to wait out the currents and wind for an hour or two before heading over to the marina by this new motor. Without a working depth sounder 😂 (I know the waters here well enough to handle that)

Safe arrival to the marina. Guessing based on voltage since I don't have my amp shunt wired up yet, I probably used between 10-35% battery to go 4 (sometimes 4.3) knots against current and tide and wind to make it in a half hour. This boat may look shitty on deck, but it's now a sports car.Less vibration than the diesel despite removing the dampening pads. Whisper quiet overall (I heard birds over my boat) and the motor and battery bank and cables are all cool to the touch.Repower complete.

after a burst of interesting stuff flooding into my inbox over the past ~10 days, which has slowed down a bit, I'm poking my head out at what postings are out there and *don't* have headhunters coming to get me for themand my god y'allthe job scene in tech is fucking depressing for anyone who shares any of the Merveilles ethos, right nowevery other posting is something crypto-chain-Airbnb/Uber wannabe-gig labour-military complex, such little honest "good" work on these boards rn

I don't even have a spicy clip to paste from this article. It's just excellent enough to be worth a read, especially for any of us who are or have recently had to deal with the hellish nonsense that is live coding and/or take-home problems to prove we can solve some silly algorithmic thing in isolation of any real work we'd ever do, or any portfolio we might have.https://leftalign.substack.com/p/are-tech-interviews-broken-or-is

I really. do. not. want. another smartphone. But unfortunately the LightPhone bang-for-buck isn't there for me, and my Pixel 4a is hardware-failing in a new way lately that will not be sanely repairable, so I need to start figuring shit out.Anyone have rec's for something rootable and preferably ROM-able? (I use MicroG and ROMs that enable it[1]). Unwilling to spend more than $300-400ish I think. SD card slots preferable. Small phones > big phones.[1] Yes, I know, https://nolanlawson.com/2017/11/27/living-with-an-open-source-phone/

When I get to write code where the functions are smol (<5 LOC), mathematically "pure" in the Haskell sense of the word, and still expressive when read aloud in English, I smile quite a bit.My coding style in TypeScript and Python these days doesn't even remotely hide my FORTH, Haskell, and Ruby influences. Write words, not sprawling methods from hell.

I'm very glad we made it past the era of software development where we fought about vim vs emacs all day, and instead I now have to fight to find instructions or support for literally anything that isn't VSCode using their Marketplace(obligatory reminder of https://ghuntley.com/fracture/)

DHL is one of those extremely rare companies in this era that I truly am just always happy with. They grossly underpromise and overdeliver basically every time. "ETA: Two Weeks", and then it shows up in two days. Every. Damn. Time. Nothing ever gets stuck in a loop going from Anchorage to Memphis to New York to Anchorage to Los Angeles to Seattle or something stupid, it Just Works.DHL is bloody expensive sometimes but with how awful FedEx and UPS often are, I'd love more places offering DHL.

It's a weird feeling to be excited about "downgrading" gear, but across audio, computing, and a select couple of other areas of my life, I'm "downgrading" various gear (either to recoup funds, recoup power draw, realign with changed interests over time, or to make physical room for things that will bring me more enjoyment in this smol space) and quite a bit thrilled about it.

30 days of not drinking fully caffeinated drinks - couple of decaf coffees here and there, but otherwise no non-trace amounts. So far not worth it, and rather unsure if I'll be continuing this experiment. I have zero motivation and get absolutely nothing done, work or personal. If /r/decaf is to be believed, things tend to turn around for folks around the 4-6 month mark where productivity returns. What I don't know is if I can wait that long.Brighter side: anxiety is near-gone. Life is calm.

NPR: "This year, Americans will spend an average of $192.80 [each] on Valentine's Day"Yeah alright maybe I'm fine with being single for yet another one of these after all. Hold the Hallmark Holidays.

Tons of hate for rockets today on the timeline and I'm just sitting here with my Starlink dish (which has no meaningful competition for what I have to assume is a variety of complicated political and financial and logistical reasons) being the primary way I'll have internet connectivity and the ability to do my remote job for the summer like :thisisfine: I can hate space being taken over by billionaires as much as anyone but there are distinct positives use cases from SpaceX, too.

A friend of mine recently burned out on maintaining open-source software and communities, and had been half-joking for a while that they wanted a sassy license to the effect of "I release this code for free, take it or leave it, or go do it yourself".Tonight I wrote that license for and with him. Please enjoy the "Fork Off" Public License, v0.9: https://github.com/klardotsh/fork-off-public-license(I'll tag a v1.0 after any feedback y'all might have to clarify things or make it funnier. Forking it is also of course ok.)

#introduction time!I'm Josh, I make my living writing software and holding myself back from throwing servers into fires. Outside of that I like to use and contribute to small, ethical, and free software projects, I day-and-weekend sail a 50-year-old 32ft boat around Puget Sound and the San Juans, and I've dabbled with music production at times! A much longer term dream is to live more sustainably off the grid in Southeast Alaska.Happy to be on such a tightknit homeserv, thanks for having me!
