I write funny toots and post them only for myself. That’s the power of mastodon — what I previously wrote and never sent on Twitter, deleting the drafts, here could live written but unseen.

I still wish mastodon supported something like friend groups. Should I look at friendica? Haha.

@isagalaev Yes, but what I want is to use the same account with a more flexible control over who'd get which updates.I really don't like the “approval for following” way that was in twitter and is now here — I'd much more prefer to have stuff that is visible for everyone, and then have something extra to those who _I_ follow, regardless of if they follow me. LJ-style.With an extra account I'd basically need to ask mutual followers to follow that extra account, and repeat for any new ones.

@isagalaev I mean, given that we don't even yet have an ability to disable comments… probably won't happen.Potentially something like an account on friendica (basically, fediverse facebook) could work — it has groups, and you can even include other fediverse accounts there, and they would get notifications with links to the posts — but for now it seems that there is no way to actually read them without having an account on friendica with the same group rights, which defeats the purpose sadly.

@isagalaev Yep, I just like to explore the options — if friendica did have something like OAuth to get the friends/groups-only posts, it could be a nice alternative to a second mastodon account. I'll probably later look at some other things in fediverse, just so I'll know that I'm not missing something, and then would probably end up creating a “private” account on mastodon if I won't find anything. Similar how on twitter people had a “real_…” accounts, also due to an inability to have groups.

@isagalaev A lot of things in facebook are built on groups, and I saw them being used a lot when I was semi-active there (usually just “friends only”, sometimes with more strict groups, not from technical people). And facebook basically took its security settings almost one to one from livejournal, where the audience for these was also not technical really.

@isagalaev I'd say the main problem right now — how to provide the proper security for anything like that. People are wary even of mastodon's “DMs but nor really”, and if something would have an ability to target an abstract entity, it would need things like immediate revoking, and end-to-end encryption, which can be hard technically, especially if the goal would be to make them work across the whole fediverse.

A random question: do you use Mastodon's official web app, or do you predominantly use another app?(and are you on the same instance as me, or outside — this is important for a certain thing I'm thinking about)

New post: “Scope Selector Nuance”.https://blog.kizu.dev/scope-selector-nuance/In yesterday’s “weekly” I shared a new MDN docs page for @scope — a new #CSS feature currently only available in Chromium-based browsers.Looking at it made me remember one issue that I had with the @scope, which was actually intended.I imagine this might be something many people would stumble upon, so here I am, sharing it.

New post: “Cap-Height Vertical Align”.https://blog.kizu.dev/cap-height-align/The new year is here, and, with it, a season where people put out their CSS wishlists for the future. One thing caught my attention in @tylersticka’s list: an ability to vertically align to the middle of the font’s cap-height. I am thrilled to report that there are at least two relatively ok workarounds available in the most recent browsers, courtesy of the new `cap` unit!

For years, what I was mindlessly doing instead: applying a negative margin with “random” values of 0.2em-0.3em for cases like this, which, coincidentally, almost the same!Intuitively, and by testing, I was pleased with these values all this time, but having a proper method on one hand, and a confirmation that this type of adjustment results in what the fallback ends up being in the end is nice, haha.

Cursed idea: a monospace font that uses contextual alternates for straight quotation marks ("" and '') and makes them to look like curly ones (“” and ‘’).Also, programming languages should start allowing curly quotation marks anywhere they allow regular ones.

Decided to try matrix (for Nth time). For now, in a “lazy” mode: instead of looking for a good instance to join, using the “main” one for now.@cinnyapp seems like the best client so far — custom emojis/stickers is a must when going from something like a discord/slack, and it works very well as an installed web app on the desktop/iOS so far.If anyone wants to try chatting there — feel free to send me a DM here with your matrix address :)
