This is a very cool tool that provides real comfort about no-shit decentralizationhttps://moderation-explorer.online/Who Moderates My Posts and Timeline? This tool helps you see how moderation choices made by different communities on the Fediverse affect what shows up in your own personal timelineModeration on the Fediverse is decentralized. Each community makes its own rules and has its own moderators[And I can mute or block individual accounts or whole servers so they don’t show up in my feed]

@neurovagrant The better question is whether we've been able to forget themI still remember the [former] phone numbers of my closest friends from grade school through high school. Like the lyrics to "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" I'm pretty sure I'll remember then until I'm dead. And maybe even after that

JFC. Bill Ackman sees a deepfake video of Elon speaking that is clearly labeled a deepfakeBill (apparently) does not see the label but assumes it is a deepfake. However, he agrees with the message and thinks it's something Elon *would have said* so he retweets it to his 1.8m followers anywayI don't think there's anyone Bill lies to more than he lies to himself (this is true of many of his peers; they're savants at self-deception), but this is amoral[I watched 0 seconds of the video]

@ricci At my old job, there was one guy who was worse than the guys who never contributed to the group projectHe was the guy who showed up to the first meeting of the group, dropped a completed project on the desk, said he'd done the whole thing by himself the night before, and we need not bother checking his work because it was obviously correct[He also told me he'd done the same thing at Harvard, because of course he did]Unlike AI, he did the actual work. Like AI, it needed redoing

Need a CT chest scan statTwo doctors put in the orderCT place calls to set up the appt:"I know your insurance plan has a habit of rejecting these orders on the first try, so how about we make your appointment for tom'w afternoon rather than the morning? That'll give us extra time to get it approved."I don't often have good things to say about medical services owned by private equity, but I admire the sort of forward thinking that went into scheduling this

@stux Penn Jillette did a great essay on this in '05"Believing there's no God means I can't really be forgiven except by kindness and faulty memories. That's good; it makes me want to be more thoughtful. I have to try to treat people right the first time around.[...]Believing there is no God gives me more room for belief in family, people, love, truth, beauty, sex, Jell-O and all the other things I can prove and that make this life the best life I will ever have."https://www.npr.org/2005/11/21/5015557/there-is-no-god

There is a friend group I've been a part of for nearly 30 yearsI feel certain that, of the dozen of us, four of them would hide me and my family in an attic if it came to thatBut two of the twelve work for companies that are mapping the attics and turning the data over to ICE. [That's not the specific work they themselves do, but their paychecks are subsidized by that work]For the last couple months, I've struggled with my ability to engage with the four who have no issue with the two

@sennoma One of the two has a mid-nine-figure net worth and they treat the group to a couple of extremely lavish vacations every year. This undoubtedly reduces the desire of the beneficiaries of the largess to confront how tainted the money is[Imagine that one of them was one of google's first 100 employees and is still there 25+ years later.]

The opposite of schadenfreude is mudita, a Buddhist term for sympathetic or vicarious joy. It's the joy you feel when someone else succeedsI could use a little mudita today. What do you have for me, fediverse? Hit me with your successes, the more mundane the better (but I'm all for hearing about your big wins, too)

@Nonilex This is fantastic news, although part of me has a hard time reconciling,“We have been wounded by the tentacles of corruption and by the criminal networks that have deeply scarred the life of our country"and "announcing the arrest warrant on X"

I've been wearing these shoes for a little over a year now. Pretty much every time I meet someone new, I get asked if they're one pair or two. I ask them to guessIf you'd asked me a year ago how I thought the answers would split, I'd have said 90/10 in the correct direction. But having let several hundred people guess, it splits about 50/50 I put the answer in the alt text

Wall St. Journal today:"With more actors, pop stars and other celebrities spotted unapologetically smoking, the cultural taboo against it shows signs of ebbing. That worries antismoking advocates."Forget avocado toast. @futurebird I had a friend who, many years ago, did a research project on cold reading. They went into it an avowed skeptic believing it to be bullshit and wanting to prove itAfter doing thirty or forty "readings", the feedback from clients was so positive that he began to wonder if he did have some sort of psychic power after allSo with the next client, he did as you suggested — he gave the client the "opposite" reading and of course the client gushed profuselyInner conflict solved
