@publius @gigabecquerel Now that is strange but interesting. That‘s a nuclear battery then, but not with a thermocouple heated by radioactive decay but simply charged by β particles… Could even be interesting as a power source with current energy harvesting / low power technologies, if there wasn’t the radioactivity. Tempted to try that with Am-241 as an α source. Any chances to measure an effect?

@stux D‘accord. But a well-made chair built by a carpenter might be a valued piece of furniture for generations. More often trees are processed to shoddy pressboard furniture or cheap paper.

@stux @markdevries Yes. I wonder how they came up with that price. Simply by estimating how many units they want to sell to fully compensate for developing the product? They have tons of $$$ in their backyard to not having to bother about fast ROI. Giving it away to developers for a lower (more symbolic) price would have been a bold move. Even if only as a loan like the DTK Mac mini with the first Apple Silicon CPU.

@stux If only oil was all that they are emitting. Think of explosives (nitro-organic compounds such as TNT), white phosphorus and even chemical weapons that are a serious threat to fishermen and people on the shores.

@stux Maybe the first step would be a space elevator in order to avoid air pollution by rockets and maximize material transfer into orbit. Afterwards a scenario like in The Expanse could become realistic, with colonization of the asteroid belt for material resources, and Mars incl. terraforming.

@stux Thanks for initiating this interesting discussion. I‘m learning Dutch atm, so I enjoyed reading the toots. First it might seem odd that a relatively small country like NL has these dialect differences, but then again even the local dialects between two neighbouring villages can differ significantly 😃.
