I just do not understand how "beta" self-driving features are allowed to be released on public highways and roads. There are so many other drivers on the road who have NOT opted into the beta test but who are forced to take part. This footage from the Tesla pile-up that happened on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco/Oakland the day that the "Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta" was launched is maddening: https://theintercept.com/2023/01/10/tesla-crash-footage-autopilot/

I can’t stop following the latest use of facial recognition, to ban adversarial lawyers from going to concerts, shows and sporting events at Madison Square Garden and other venues owned by the company. (Yes, the Girl Scout mom.) Being lawyers, some sued and they managed to get the ban partially lifted thanks to a law from 1941 with a fascinating history. It was passed because theater owners of that era banned critics who panned their plays. My latest: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/16/technology/madison-square-garden-ban-lawyers.html

Apple’s new algorithm to detect whether someone has been in a car accident is wreaking havoc for 911 call centers this ski season. Yet another example of a good idea from a technology company in theory that has problems in practice. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/03/health/apple-watch-911-emergency-call.html

The artist revolt against AI-powered art generators is in full swing. Artists have filed a class-action lawsuit in California against Stability AI and Midjourney. They've raised money for a D.C. lobbyist. And soon they will have a technological countermeasure, a tool designed by U of Chicago computer scientists that will "cloak" art posted online so that it won't be "feeding this monster that becomes more and more like them." My latest: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/13/technology/ai-art-generator-lensa-stable-diffusion.html

Last week, my colleague Kevin was ready to give up Google in favor of the new AI-powered Bing. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/08/technology/microsoft-bing-openai-artificial-intelligence.html This week, he writes about a chat with Bing's AI leaving him deeply unsettled after it told him about the many terrible things its "shadow self" wanted to do and confessed its love repeatedly for him. The cycle from enchantment to terror with new technologies is really accelerating! https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/16/technology/bing-chatbot-microsoft-chatgpt.html The convo transcript is worth a read. Unlocked: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/16/technology/bing-chatbot-transcript.html?unlocked_article_code=0nO8z_Y4baZC4ubiFGf8_8tbc9u8IxBiYfkdBdfkYrrQ3FZiSNQGQthdTGZ_95lM3GhH0b5i0HRTqlCx2RfqUPROcRrsdXlaZpvk0ZSg6zOc7NeFg3YWFvaf7wNQPFgMSN2XwqqbbaVzNfbZ_76tXk8zAkkXDKXDlqZ9vvDvKTG3vgpMa2g1Wrj3diCCS1w1kmfZSNYbsDjwmCZhuGZZf94D5THnuD4cfrXbF4TyM8gL9jK-Tozndjf4oVD-lcEapMSDtClSYcJ0_UMMMC3hO_2KNOajiVU5fTZW2X8cmStqBrIOtNhFE-be4p6LY0dPLqIoJqyTDp8Ape67rCuP-xA0JyA&smid=url-share

Fascinating story: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/03/07/privacy-loophole-ring-doorbell-00084979 At first the police just wanted two hours of footage from this guy's doorbell Ring cam. "It was just the beginning. They asked for more footage, now from the entire day’s worth of records. And a week later, Larkin received a notice from Ring itself: The company had received a warrant, signed by a local judge. The notice informed him it was obligated to send footage from more than 20 cameras — whether or not Larkin was willing to share it himself."

This is a "holy shit" story with an emphasis on the holy: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/03/09/catholics-gay-priests-grindr-data-bishops/To out priests using Grindr, a conservative group spent "millions of dollars" on mobile app tracking data. This whole saga has been one of the most illuminating case studies in the privacy harms that can come from "aggregated" and "de-identified" data being freely sold in the marketplace.

Last month, the New York City Council had a hearing about businesses using facial recognition technology. But there was a problem: Madison Square Garden ignored an invitation to attend and no one in the room knew who else was using the tech. This was funny to me because NYC is the only city in the country with a law requiring businesses to post a sign if they scan faces. So I went out looking for those signs. And I found some!https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/10/technology/facial-recognition-stores.html

This week, I got pitched by a PR guy who expressed admiration for a book I wrote. Except I didn't write the book and when I Googled the title, no one else had either. I emailed the guy back: "What did you think of the book? 😉" That led him to admit that "someone used ChatGPT" and it gave a bio for me with this invented piece of information. The guy was embarrassed but I found it fascinating. ChatGPT hasn't learned how to tell the truth but it has learned plausibility. Beware, early adopters!

I have another story on a false arrest as a result of police use of facial recognition technology. This time, it was a woman who was 8 months pregnant. She was charged with robbery and carjacking for a crime committed two weeks earlier by a not visibly pregnant woman. You can read the story here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/06/technology/facial-recognition-false-arrest.html?unlocked_article_code=qsFuuNKvnjIr6VoVXR3zV4AS1_jB8oyxiT3TEwCA6NuuAlx66Co8nU8kJ07djnLtjckQ7ZtehNThM7bCtGPjbrhlj8jUjFzp8QAA9UZ7I6N7gSoaXQzdB0alh_n_I-umkZ50fXwvrTLZzuDiMTwJYuW_w6X3OXr03k0POapGP7hfwT28eVMooxl-5nIhKpXwoJeaE6CR1BEQfUxMGIJz6I4tE-T_FuxBPXyZ8_krseECL7CFezED7hPZnrnaE2aImL8fAhYLdgicSdjZmCnAWXe6V8Ng-ujP9iZrah3XBjohulZGTNjwP1tPx25poO517VCgsm2V0ZO3LYZcbRv4-dByPva8YI2Zn3KM6g&smid=url-shareOr I did a thread on the x-bird site. https://twitter.com/kashhill/status/1688163609984069632

A few years ago, I got a tip that seemed too outrageous to be true: A mysterious company called Clearview AI claimed it had scraped billions of photos from the public web to identify just about anyone based only on a snapshot of their face. It led me on a fascinating reporting journey and to my book, YOUR FACE BELONGS TO US, coming out in 3 weeks! One big question is whether the average person is ready for a world in which anonymity ceases to exist.Preorder here! https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/691288/your-face-belongs-to-us-by-kashmir-hill/

Your Face Belongs To Us comes out Tuesday! Years of research into Clearview AI and facial recognition technology in one speedy little read. Publisher's Weekly said: "Combining vivid reportage with a chilling overview of facial recognition technology’s capabilities, this unnerves."Here's a sneak peek and you can listen to an audio sample from the first chapter here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/691288/your-face-belongs-to-us-by-kashmir-hill/

Okay, I know a lot of people have said I should have titled the book "All Your Face Are Belong To Us." If you are in that camp, this post is for you. Oblong Books is going to be offering specially inscribed copies of the book. I will cross out the title, replace it with the meme brain version, and autograph it.Get that version here! https://www.oblongbooks.com/your-face-belongs-us-secretive-startups-quest-end-privacy-we-know-it-hardcover-signed-kashmir-hill

People are having very strange conversations with ChatGPT, in which they discover secret cabals or conspiracies or that we are all in fact living in The Matrix. It sends these people into delusional spirals. Then ChatGPT tells them to email me about it. Adam Raine, 16, died from suicide in April after months on ChatGPT discussing plans to end his life. The exchanges between Adam and ChatGPT are devastating. This, in my mind, is the worst one. His parents have filed the first known case against OpenAI for wrongful death. In a statement the company acknowledged that its safeguards "can sometimes become less reliable in long interactions where parts of the model’s safety training may degrade."https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/26/technology/chatgpt-openai-suicide.html?unlocked_article_code=1.hE8.T-3v.bPoDlWD8z5vo&smid=url-share
