@mozilla I've been a user of Firefox since it was first released (at which point I migrated to it from Netscape Navigator - I was *never* an Internet Explorer user). I'd been proud to use it and promote it up until recently. But crap like this has got me looking very seriously at switching to Vivaldi.Mozilla is on the wrong path, and this AI crap is one example of it. It might not be too late to turn back. I implore you to do so. 3/3

Dear Every Company Everywhere:If you are "experiencing longer-than-usual wait times" *every time* I call you, then those times are, by definition, the usual times. You need to hire more help-line staff. The fact that you refuse to do makes it clear that my call is not, in fact, "important to [you]." So that's two bullshit lies before I even get to talk to someone. Not a good look.Corporate America, do better.

@micah I feel like they missed the chance to point out in the text that Liechtenstein is one of the world's two *doubly*-landlocked countries. Yeah, the map shows that it borders Switzerland and Austria, and has no coastline of its own, but I feel like having it pointed out in print that both of those countries are *also* landlocked would help hammer the point home a little more amusingly.

There is a value in making one's pull requests as small as possible. Among other things, it makes them easier for your colleagues to review.Unfortunately, "as small as possible" doesn't always mean "actually small".I'm currently looking at a PR that requires 30 files, because the ticket itself was to roll out an entire new feature. (And no, subdividing it wouldn't have made sense.)Ugh.Not everything decomposes into tiny increments. It sucks, but it's true.#work #webdev

OTOH, this particular co-worker of mine has helpfully left comments on large swathes of the changes, as part of his PR! Very nice, and very helpful!Definitely one of the kinds of people who I make sure to type "co-worker" for, because I don't want anyone to think for a moment that there's any possibility of him being a cow-orker. π

@aral @xankarn I can only assume Scarborough and Brzezinski stock the water coolers at their studios with Vichy water.History remembers people like this, and calls them collaborators.

@davidrevoy The artwork and the alt text describing it are both poignant and touching.I'm about to migrate from Firefox (which I've been using since it was Netscape 3.04) to Librewolf as well. It's nice to feel welcomed.

@futurebird I'd already seen the image (and nodded soberly and thought "yup, good warning"). But for some reason, when I read the alt text, I suddenly busted a gut laughing. Something about reading the actual words "a cat photoshopped into a hazmat suit" just gave me a major dose of absurdity.Anyway, kudos for the info and the excellent alt text!

@futurebird And of course there's the fourth option: "Here is how things could be, and indeed very likely will be, if we keep going the way we are. Here is a future that I implore us all to *avoid*."

I've been writing using em dashes since the 1990s. The reason AI uses em dashes is because it was trained on my writing, and that of countless other humans like me.#AI #AICrap #EmDashes #typography #writing #FuckAI

@existentialcomics > Large-scale cooperation, open protocols, and free software gave us the internet. Also government. The foundations of the internet started as US government research projects. That's why, to this day, reverse DNS lookups include references to the `in-addr.arpa` domain, with ARPA being the Advanced Research Projects Agency.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.arpaI am no fan of government, but I gotta give them their due on this.(But yes, very much agreed on "not capitalism"! ππ»π―)

It looks like some C-level exec at Soundcloud decided, "Hey, we're making too much money, and our users actually trust us or something. We've got to remedy that situation! Seriously, I want to turn this place into a ghost town, where all our content's been moved elsewhere by its creators."Seriously, why else would they do this? π€‘Please boost so creators know to move platforms.https://soundcloud.com/terms-of-use#AI #Soundcloud #BadIdeas #AICrap #AIHype #AIGarbage

@foone Holy crap, I think that computer is probably older than the Bi Pride flag is. (The bi flag only dates to 1998. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisexual_flag Got a vintage on that computer?)

Well, I guess I'll just be deleting my Instacart app and canceling my account.Fuck those assholes.(For those who don't want to click through: They're suing New York state because we just passed some laws saying you have to pay grocery delivery workers the same minimum wage as everyone else, and the app has to allow shoppers to tip greater than 10% if they want to. Tell me you love exploiting workers without telling me...)https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/instacart-sues-new-york-city-over-minimum-pay-tipping-laws-220205207.html#Instacart #BoycottInstacart #SupportWorkers

I've seen an uptick in links to Substack lately, so here's yet another reminder:Substack is a transphobic, pro-Nazi platform. Many of will not follow links to it. We are not giving that place any eyeballs or clicks.Publishing there, or linking to it, helps the Nazi site owners. Please don't do it.#Substack #SubstackIsTransphobic #SubstackIsRunByNazis #NaziSubstack #NaziShit #BoycottSubstack

RE: https://stranger.social/@lednaBM/115718877275566120It's weird how every time someone runs a UBI or GBI test like this, it always turns out positive. Like, I *never* see headlines saying "UBI Trial in Bumfucksburg, West Idaho Fails to Achieve Goals".They always work, never fail. It's almost like they're a good idea and we should move past the "trial" stage, hmm? π€#UBI #UniversalBasicIncome #BasicUniversalIncome #GuaranteedBasicIncome #poverty
