Internet search engines now only work for finding stuff somebody pays for to be found. The idea that you can find anything on the web if only you know what to search for (or the corollary, that people can find you even if you don't pay for it, as long as they do a decent job at searching) is laughable at this point - there is no such thing left as an un-bought search string. Capitalism was always going to put the internet in a box & sell it back to us.#ux #tech #business #enshittification

@slashdot yeah, about the Turing test, it's time to retire it. The TT is literally about whether a machine can fool a person into thinking it's intelligent & we know this isn't very difficult. What's difficult is - apparently - understanding that this has nothing to do with intelligence & that believing it does will cause untold problems. If you're hard up for a thought experiment relating to this topic, may I recommend the Chinese Box.

@Wolven Also, as if all that wasn't sh*tty enough - which it is - we can probably also expect machines like this to start flagging women as potential criminals because they have to pretend to be carrying a pepper spray or other concealed defensive weapon just to walk the street in relateive peace. - and to not flag the would-be rapists women fear because they're white "but he seems like such a nice guy" men, a bias which will unquestionably be built into the algo.

@kaia Oh, wow... I remember REVOX being one of my extremely coveted brands when I was a teen & definitely couldn't afford to come anywhere near it 😝 their reel-to-reel decks in particular were state-of-the-art at the time 🤩

I simply cannot wrap my head around the neuro-physiology/psychology of "knowing exactly what notes to play & how to fret them & having done it 1000 times before & playing slow enough that I have like the entire fucking afternoon to find each note & yet my fucking fingers still keep placing themselves somewhere else"... No, seriously - if you don't want to be considerate or inclusive, then that's your choice & you're free to it, but I simply don't understand why it makes you so disproportionately angry when other people state their intent of inclusivity & consideration. And it *is* disproportionate anger, take my word for it; I meet it every day - even when people try to sound reasonable (e.g. the whole "what about the men?" thing) there's an unmistakeable, white-hot energy just below the surface. #DEI
