@Full_marx It's fun to visit Castro district if you're any kind of queer. But my second time there, all I got was, Holy crap, this city is the definition of gentrification without the infrastructure improvements@design_RG

@AbsintheRelated to #toyprogrammingchallenge, I thought this was a good read!https://jvns.ca/blog/2019/11/20/what-makes-a-programming-exercise-good/

#toyprogrammingchallenge #GameOfLifeThis was a fun one! Written in Ruby, I decided on treating the board size as infinite by expanding it whenever the first or last row or column has an alive cell.The entry file is game_of_life.rb in the root directory, and for simplicity, it just runs the "small exploder" pattern instead of taking an argument for initial state.https://git.allgood.dev/jump_spider/game-of-life

@freemo There are trade offs, imo. otoh, it's valid to think that common people having access to firearms would deter a violent government. oto, the Chinese government is already using lethal force; I can only imagine how much it would escalate if both sides had ready access to firearms.

@freemoI voted no because it puts an undue burden on the user. I think the solution is either to enlist a moderator who can read the language -or- trust that other users who can read the language will report responsibly@saxnot

@freemo That's valid and I agree. I'm concerned about those who want to protest but don't want to use lethal force. They'd be caught in the crossfire.

@freemoWell, gun culture is different in the states, and I can only imagine that if one lone gunman opened fire during a protest, a few more shots might follow from police. There would definitely be a panic and bystanders would be hurt.I'm not sure it follows that all protestors who want to use lethal force would organize themselves into a separate space.

@freemo Semi-open registration may be appropriate then, requiring a written submission for why a user wants to join@saxnot

@freemo I'm less concerned with en masse slaughter and more maximally reducing harm.I should clarify that I'm not entirely against private gun ownership; like you said, recent history and modern history speak to how an outright ban ends up working. I'm just hesitant when it comes to adding lethal force to any conflict.

@saxnot @freemo 💯 I don't know how the written submission feature works; maybe the submission can be cross-referenced with the poster's actual activity? And I think there's a moderation feature to purge an account's activity from the server, although I'm not sure how well that federates.

@saxnot @freemo It may be appropriate to include a clause in the ToS that moderation is always best effort and due supporting multiple languages, non-English moderation will not be as comprehensive as desired. (And a call for volunteer moderators in the ToS might be good too.)

@AbsintheYep! Like I said, my implementation treats the board as functionally infinite as cells grow towards the borders

@design_RGDepends on what mastery we're talking about. Mastering computer science or informatics, that's probably a PhD level pursuit; programming is just a set of tools for informatics, and different languages are like variations of medical tools or chemicals. You can master a specific tool fairly easily given enough time, but you'll be limited by how every problem looks like a nail unless you learn how different tools can be used together. That pursuit is never ending. @freemo @Full_marx

@design_RG I mean, like I said in my introduction toot on this instance, I don't personally agree with the political choice to federate with all instances; just as I don't personally agree with the political choice to defederate from all instances that federate with Gab-like instances, because I don't espouse that level of political purity.I've been spending more time on my personal instance lately, but I like qoto, there are definitely interesting people here and the personal moderation tools are enough to not see who I don't want to see. People who want to completely isolate hate in the fediverse are, strictly imo, not appreciating how difficult that is from an ActivityPub standpoint.
