@ParadeGrotesque I‘ve decided if the US makes it through 2024 without a civil war, I’m going to call that a win. And yes, I understand that this is not within my control.

@ParadeGrotesque I certainly am! And I’m sure later this week I’ll be researching financial assets to see if I can do better than current insurance, loans, retirement accounts.Only then will I allow myself to trudge through the morass of photographs from the last year to cull the archives and print an annual album.

@mark The assassination politics essay didn’t really help the argument in favor.

@danmcd @emaste I thought about dual booting my #OpenIndiana workstation with FreeBSD, but I got stressed about how to ensure the different zfs implementations were safe with each other, same with boot loader. So illumos has its box to itself.Though it’s likely getting replaced with SmartOS this weekend so I can play with the WebUI. And at that point, I could definitely use a bsd vm on there for poutriere builds.

@antranigv @winterschon @stefano How’s the api stabilizing? A lot of the ansible and terraform dev I’ve done in the past is just getting the api calls wrapped meaningfully, then making sure it handles idempotence, errors, retries and properly responding to changes made outside config mgmt.

@antranigv @winterschon @stefano Terraform is going to be strange. I should look into how providers work that aren’t just doing HTTP. Yay, new things to learn!

@futurebird I’ve been enjoying https://www.dong.digital/morsemania/, but a physical trainer sounds like a wise investment after I take my general.

@prettygood @vga256 I honestly have never tried that for similar photos, only for exact duplicates on Linux. It’s fine, but half the time I’d rather use rmlint and a text editor to edit commands for the detected files.

I know the 4chan, GamerGate and InfoWars origins of MAGA are well reported, but how many folks are talking about how Tim Ferris has bringing together the VC contingent and alt-health movements since 2007 when he published a hit book about his get rich quick marketing for supplements?

I usually take it for granted, especially having known members of the overlap for about a decade. But it seems like most journalists don’t connect the dots, as if the constant ads for supplements on Alex Jones’ show is a relatively modern thing or just a random occurrence. These roots long predate the pandemic.

But also, the health communities that people thing are part of MAHA used to be completely different. If you look at the Four Hour Body, you find a fellow completely unable to appreciate the value of a fresh vegetable over frozen. This is not the kind of person who appeals to the crunchy organic raw milk crowd. While Ferris has made movements across the isle, like with 4H Chef, I’m dubious anything unites the ephedrine and raw milk folks beyond a desire for less regulation.

@futurebird I long ago decided that the rampant spam on the unmoderated cyberpunks mailing list was really just cover noise protecting steganographically hidden messages

Is anyone actually making progress on mastodon<->bluesky integration these days? Most of the people I actually care about are on mastodon, but bsky is slowly collecting most of the institutions I'd like to follow.

@futurebird So much restitution is being denied victims from this grift. In some ways, it’s worse than the corruption of the pardons.

@david_chisnall @whitequark Is there a good choice?Or are you saying this like “democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried”Knowing only IRC, XMPP & SMS at the protocol level, I know my opinions aren’t contemporary.

@stefano I had a great conversation the other day with some FreeBSD folks about how to position it competitively when the user believes they need k8s instead.Sure, plenty of k8s flame was thrown, but at the end we agreed that for the user’s particular needs (some workloads were Linux only codebases, multi-cloud deployment not cost-optimized) k8s was really a better choice than nomad+jails or a custom orchestration setup.

@futurebird Far too many folks head straight to leather instead of dawdling at buckram. But there’s a reason it’s the standard libraries rebind into! If they’re not careful, beautiful leather today just means someone is going to need to learn about Klucel G later.
