@smalltownhero Any chance of getting a full resolution that I can get printed here (saves on shipping anyway)? I'll pay, or dono to a charity of your choice.

@bibliotecaria I've seen it make up books, scientific papers, Linux commands, historical events, world series results, and cities in several states. chatGPT is the loquacious drunk at the end of the bar. Talks steadily, seems to make sense, fails the fact check.

@The_Asshat @SwiftOnSecurity I had a rural point of presence feeding about 10k customers. Dual feed, one overhead, one buried.Buried got hit by a backhoe digging a foundation next door (5 meters from where the plans said). He also hit the 8 inch water main we'd put above the fiber to protect it.He panicked at the hole filling with water, put the backhoe on the trailer without lowering the bucket and drove under the overhead fiber - Taking out the fiber and power to the neighborhood.

@Polychrome The first "big" contract my consulting company got in the late 90s was to build a monster Usenet server for Time-Warner/Roadrunner. Microblogging was something lots of people did, and the majority were not techish at all. (believe me, I also worked second tier helpdesk -- def not techs.)

@tilvids I have not yet seen a complex install that couldn't be simplified with a relatively trivial script

@piggo I wouldn't say crucial, honestly I'd probably substitute a better thick walled pepper anyway. Bell peppers rarely make a dish.

Asking the hivemind:My wife is thinking about a career change. She's a research scientist/administrator, great at writing/analytics/organization. I think blue team would be a good fit & she's interested in what I teach. But she really wants a regular 40 hour week job, not something that requires all nighters and heavy on-call.Thoughts?Boost for reach appreciated.

@KimPerales It's interesting at the least. Concerned about the engineering:It is a two layer cap with an insulator between layers. No way to run rebar between the layers without shorting it out.How do you keep it from leaking charge or unexpectedly discharging?45 cubic metres at $150/m3 for 10 kwh is $675/kwh just for the concrete, way more costly than standard batteries.

@mjg59 Which tells me I could likely get to all that info via the TV. I wonder, does it sync all that?

@mjg59 Yet another reason not to put a freaking phone in a TV. Or fridge, or coffee maker, etc.I don't mind 'smart' things, but don't want them reporting back to cloud, while expanding attack surface.

@stux Pushing Elon Musk into space junk to clean up low earth orbit? He goes backwards (anti-orbital) from the ship. If you succeed, it hits a starlink and they both burn up when they hit atmosphere.Extra points if you can hear the screams from the space station.

@mttaggart One thing I've recommended to students is when they're doing practical exercises, turn on a recorder and dictate notes to yourself. Doesn't work in a classroom environment, but if they're doing it from home it works well. They get a record of what they did, how/if it worked, what they did on blind faith without understanding, etc. But it doesn't break flow & concentration the way stopping to take notes does.

@mttaggart Last gig I had the motto was 'Qui dicet, docet.' He who teaches, learns.Everything I know is because my students asked.

@mttaggart Damn, now I'm wondering what honey battered catfish would taste like. It works for chicken. Now I got more shopping and cooking to do.
