Motion activated flood lights are spooking more trick-or-treaters than Halloween decorations are.

@7666 @lain @hfaust @sun Seems pretty tame compared to the escapades of Bill Clinton. They only went crazy on it because the perjury case was pretty strong.

@lain Calling someone out for being a dick is admirable, IMO.Threatening to sick cops on them for something they said isn't.

@wjmaggos That's a common claim, yes. I think the better claim is that it's supposed to act as a deterrent.

@kaia @lain It's all a bit too European for an ignorant American such as myself. I'll excuse myself.

@wjmaggos My understanding of the particular situation begins and ends with the article you linked to, so I think I'm going to have to just claim ignorance on what you're referencing.

@NNYLiberty Teddy also thought peacetime was bad, because you can't really become a man until you shoot at people and get shot at (paraphrasing).

@lain Well you gotta keep confidential which one-eyed Norse god a man named "Odin" may want to reference. That's confidential.

@ebel Yeah, I'm pretty sure any legal system that required you be male in order to own real estate probably had some way of determining what your legal sex was. Can't get that de jure discrimination without definition.

@meowski I assume the labor market regularly fluctuates like every other market. When it's a seller's market you get complaints like this. When it's a buyer's market there's widespread angst about the state of the economy. Granted, 2022 is not part of a *natural* cycle, but the point kind of holds anyhow. It reminds me a bit of the "kids these days are soft" that people have been saying since the Roman empire.https://podcastindex.org/podcast/218305?episode=333039169

@meowski The funniest example in that podcast was the same issue of the same newspaper had the children laborers unionizing and also an editorial about how kids are lazy.

@meowski Well also being lazy about working for someone else can be a perfectly rational reaction. If people really *wanted* to do those jobs, you wouldn't have to pay them to convince them to do it.
