The people have spoken! I’ll be including ptyxis in the gnome-meta package but I will keep gnome-terminal within the repo as an optional install but it will not be default. https://mastodon.sdf.org/@jloc0/114471225000683600

@rl_dane no doubt differing spaces will have differing faces. And I’m sure they’re not evil by any means, just an overall tone one can see beaming outward. Shame really, but I’ve found none of that in other projects spaces so far. All in all, they can do whatever they need/want to do, that’s their prerogative in the end. That’s what it’s all about. But it’s also about being inclusive, and changes like this are the opposite of that. 🤷‍♂️

A few months ago I cancelled my over a decade of AT&T mobile service and moved to Mint (that Ryan Reynolds one). The service started off great but I have absolutely no connection in metro Detroit and that just won’t do. I’ve got to find a new carrier, that doesn’t suck and is cheap (because I am cheap). My phones been in SOS mode all day at work… I can’t have that. There’s no way for someone to just “call my employer” if I had an emergency outside of here. Should have just kept ‘ma Bell. 🙃

Daughter came by today with a fresh baked key lime pie (she’s turned out to be a pretty good baker), a handle-less coffee mug (be left handed like me and a coffee drinker) and a new wallet. I don’t know how I created such a thoughtful daughter but she’s the greatest. My son, (after having me pick him up from work) said “oh yeah, Happy Fathers Day. “ — welp, they can’t all be perfect. 😂

I got an email from #xfinity that I’m 75% thru my bandwidth for the month today and it’s only the 11th. I forgot I was on a metered connection before I decided to build #SBo. Oops. 💀

I learned today that the people of Reddit really don’t think for themselves. They take a headline at face value and assume it must be absolute. Oh and they really fucking hate that #slackware users have managed to keep #gnome running but their favorite distro can’t. 😬

@matthew I’ve never tried devuan, but Slackware 15.0 is about the same age as Debian 11, which is fine for i3, but it’s getting old. There is an updated mesa, and even gcc 15 optionally available but they feel like additions to prolong the next release some more time out. I love Slackware, but I’ve given up on releases and run the dev version “current” which is more along the Arch way, than stable Debian way. Consider those choices when choosing (or better yet, try it in a VM first!)

I’ve been considering dumping using Apache, and then this just falls into my lap! I think I’ll give this a shot, Apache feels like major overkill for my plain html static site, it can only improve things!https://snac.bsd.cafe/r1w1s1/p/1758565061.750641

@bonifartius current is always rock solid! its the maintenance some people aren’t really ready for. I do feel it’s worth a warning at least, but most experienced users wouldn’t think anything much about it. It’s almost always the latest software, which can come with its own issues occasionally.

@matthew hrmm… I’d recommend https://docs.slackware.com/slackdocs:styleguide for basic usage info (some things may be outdated), Alien’s blog https://blog.slackware.nl/ (and also his package repos), https://slackalaxy.com/ - there’s some nice info, and for packages learn about SBo https://slackbuilds.org - but when using current use the site data but https://github.com/Ponce/slackbuilds this repo for scripts, https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/ the forum, and probably most important, read the changelog before updating http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/slackware/slackware64-current/ChangeLog.txt

People on Reddit seem to believe Apple will keep Rosetta 2 around. Look, the Intel emulation will die, as PPC died before it. Rosetta existed as a transition tech and it will go away, just like before. They do not care about your PC gaming on Mac. Apple does not carry a torch for legacy hardware/software. Send toot.

@m0xEE I do agree, the last time was much more abrupt and messy. But everyone knew the writing was on the wall for PPC. Kids these days really think Apple is going to keep Rosetta around literally because and for their (Windows) games, and that’s just not going to happen. Their entire Game Porting Toolkit was to get game dev interest in the new platform, not to bring in a bunch of Windows gamers. They wanted native games, and to some extent, they got that.

@thesaigoneer I did a fbsd 15 install on arm64 the other day and was saddened when sddm only gives me a x11 session but outside of that, it worked. Even though they don’t support open-vm-tools anymore it seems. Not very user-friendly in a VM to configure. Always feels like there’s nothing underneath a desktop on fbsd to me. Like it’s hollow. lol

I was searching around online earlier to see if there was a estimated amount of hard drive space required to do a full build of the latest #freebsd ports tree... and the best I got was a 20gb estimate.... and I damn well know with all the sources and temp build space alone, 20gb ain't shit. #poudrier

I had taken my #freebsd #pkgbase install and tried to update with ports, since pkgs are never up-to-date (arm64), and I noticed you can't build ports from pkgbase packages, so that's.. interesting. Won't be doing that again if there's no way around that.

This is NOT a repo... but if you have slackware64-15.0 system w/o kde & with the testing/graphics-updates installed you can install this qt6-only build of plasma 6.4.6 desktop if you follow my poorly written instructions. I'm only sharing this in the memory of Didier Spaier and his dedication to slackware. The last post of mine on LQ he liked was one I was talking about getting plasma 6 to run on 15.0. So to our friend, a tinkerer for life, I dedicate this to him.https://slackware.lngn.net/pub/x86_64/slackware64-15.0/plasma-6.4.6-slackware64-15.0/

This is as high a version as I could get plasma to go on 15.0 w/o other major upgrades. Even here, some stock packages need upgrading so be careful. If anyone wants to play with this in a VM or anything else... well, here ya go.
