every 5 years the spokesman of the You Can Recycle! trade organization says "no seriously we can actually recycle plastic now, so remember to recycle plastic" and you recycle plastic and then 5 years later there's a video of your empty coca cola bottles and your aunt's labubus and a couple of hundred thousand blu ray boxes all on fire on a riverbank. and the new spokesman of the You Can Recycle! trade organization is like "we promise this won't happen again" and the old spokesman is now at Exxon

if you invent something really evil, but nobody uses it, and then you die, do you go to hell? how about if someone uses it 50 years after you die? do you get downgraded? can you claim compensation? and does it affect your air miles

one of the reasons that it took them 11 apollo missions to get to the moon is that they would always prepare to launch when it was a full moon. they'd point at the moon and be like "there it is!!!" but by the time they got there, it was like a waning crescent or even worse, a new moon, and theyd fly straight through it

in theory it's possible to land on the concave part of the crescent moon, but the gravitational field is kind of weird, so it's more akin to landing on an asteroid or something, and then you have to deal with the poor line-of-sight to the earth which complicates radio transmissions. so generally it's not worth it, compared to simply waiting for a full moon

i was playing half life 1 the other day and i cant believe it took me like 25 years to notice that when you're in `thirdperson` mode, you can see that when gordon dies, the 'beep beep beeeep' sound effect is emitted from him, so his mouth moves as if he is saying it. while lying dead on the ground. his final words

finally started playing ""black mesa source"" today after waiting for so long that i forgot it existed. first impressions are that it MAY look pretty good, but i can't say for sure, since even in bright areas its too dark to see anything

theres a gamma setting, but it only works in fullscreen mode, and when i put the game into fullscreen mode it appears on the wrong screen. i tried it out briefly though and it made everything look really weird, so im assuming the intended appearance is this "chiaroscuro" aesthetic, at which it excels

i suppose the bulk of the development was done in that era like, idk, circa 2010 when all games looked a bit like this? i found it really baffling. theres so many games i cant play because their gamma or rendering is wrong in this specific way. original HL2 didn't have this problem, but i seem to remember some games like maybe fallout or bioshock or something did? i dont know though, since i didn't play those... because they looked like this

@mcc @lritter it's interesting that the operating system the decentralized and user-freedom-focused userland and then kernel sought to emulate was the hulking 20th century "giant corporation installs a giant machine into another giant corporation's office and configure this precisely so that it provides a centralized suite of utilities for dozens of salaried employees in cubicles with electric typewriters". because like, thats not the right model for that goal at all really. maybe the worst one

@wolf480pl @nytpu a while back i dropped like half a glass of water onto a tray of small tea-light candles and the instantaneous steam aerosolizing the molten candle wax produced a surprisingly exciting fireball

over the last few years ive been puzzled at a lot of the stuff i've seen come out of mozilla. there's just like, very little explanation for all the unforced errors and cringe messaging and like, weirdly just doing exactly the wrong thing in bizarre and novel ways and not even profiting from it. something about that "join the rebel alliance of better AI" thing has finally brought me clarity. perhaps they're just really stupid

it's a weird moment, where i guess you spend years or decades having an "implicit respect", that is, that you assume by default the people who make/represent/control the thing you like must know what they're doing, and then something reveals that maybe it's not true, and never was. it's pretty hard to actually break that kind of unquestioned trust. but by god, they're trying

i think when it becomes apparent to enough people that they are Dumb, they'll freak out and try to pivot to "no, we're not Dumb! we're actually Evil" because that's actually a lot less embarrassing for them

rest assured, you are not like those people who get obsessed with talking to ChatGPT. you're immune to that kind of psychological manipulation. you're more discerning and strong-willed than them, in fact. if anything, you're one of the top few percent of thinkers in the entire world. you're probably one of the few people alive right now, perhaps the only person, who is truly capable of inventing something totally new. something called Spiral Consciousness
