@leo You will be missed from the (old school) air waves. I remember listening to your show on KGO when I was a kid growing up on the rural Oregon coast. Given my early interest in computers and my career path in tech, I think your show had some influence. Thanks Leo!

@chfrankcgn @lauren Sure, like in the example given, someone might writecool.with a period instead of an exclamation mark as a way of being sarcastic, but nobody is going to think that properly putting periods at the end of full sentences as rude.

@freemo @trinsec It's a weird take that low income people should be paid even less because of what boils down to the greed of the owner class.

@freemo @trinsec But if automation gets rid of the need for a lot of labor, as you said, why then should people be expected to have jobs at all? Seems like we should welcome the day when people can simply live and enjoy life without spending most of their waking hours laboring, especially laboring to put a few extra dollars in someone else's bank account.

@killyourfm @thunderbird Seems like a bunch of pearl clutching to be upset that a cloud service provider wants access to your data stored by another cloud service provider.

@BruceMirken @DataDrivenMD Maybe I'm being too pessimistic, but I don't think the general public is going to change their consensus about the pandemic being over based on some information about long Covid. I think that "get vaccinated" is probably about as good as it's going to get for something that the CDC and other health orgs can recommend and get the public to go along with.

@BruceMirken I think they are being pragmatic about what is the absolute best thing to do vs what they can get the public at large to do. We barely got people to wear masks, distance, and vaccinate when 3000+ people a day were dying. I don't think there's much chance of doing the same now.

@BruceMirken I'm "admitting" that they're in a tough spot where "what would be best" collides with "what people are willing to do". I'm very reluctantly to criticize public health organizations for that reason. It's really easy to sit behind a screen and say what should be done, and quite another thing to actually have responsibility in the matter and have to deal with the practical concerns.

@benjamincodes @mattblaze There is no "Direct Message" feature in Mastodon. You have the option to post something with the privacy level set to "Only mentioned people". That seems pretty straight forward. You mention people, they can see the toot. It doesn't claim to be a secure, end-to-end encrypted messaging system. In fact, Mastodon specifically warns you of this when you change the privacy setting to "Only mentioned people". The feature is just for when you want to limit who you're interacting with when posting, perhaps to continue a conversation without public visibility.

@mattblaze @benjamincodes I'm not trying to offend. I just don't understand where the confusion comes from. The UI says what it's going to do and it says it in three words: "Only mentioned people". There doesn't seem to be a lot there to get confused about, so I'm wondering what I'm missing that's confusing some people. I assume the Mastodon devs would be wondering the same thing if they saw your post.

@freemo @MoiraEve @georgetakei You did say those words. I scrolled back up and those words appear verbatim in your preceding post. The "one of the" phrase does not make the huge difference that you're wanting us to believe that it does.

@freemo @MoiraEve @georgetakei I doubt you'd actually think it's a huge difference if you found out that you weren't considered the worst person, just one of the worst people. Either way, you're still the worst, you just have company in the latter situation.

@aral I don't understand your point. "Mastodon", the entity that releases the Mastodon software, has no say in whether or not your instance federates with Threads or any other instance.
