@shepard That’s very sad. I’ve used VIM for the past 25 years. I never knew him, of course. But it was great the way he always promoted charity work instead of asking for payment or personal acclaim.

@xianc78 @KryptoBlok What they really fear is something much simpler: that ordinary people will stop trusting them en masse. That’s the true source of their power. No need for alien spacecraft or advanced technologies. Just plain old faith in the legitimacy of institutions and a lack of curiosity about the character of those who control them.

@ranoya The English word “hack” used to mean something like this. And a “hacker” was someone who took delight in solving problems in ways the original creators of software or hardware never intended. Then the ignorant morons in the media decided it meant “technological terrorist” and ruined it—as they ruin everything they touch. 🙄

@Donkey_Kong @CSB Back in the 90s, it was often pronounced LIE-nucks for that very reason. But then some people pointed out that Linus isn’t pronounced LIE-nus in Finland, so they started trying to pronounce it the way Finns would. But there’s a bit of nuance to the vowel in Linus. It’s closer to LEE-nus, but there’s just enough of a diphthong that it has a hint of the “IH” sound to it as well. So that’s what it became.

@anornymorse @furgar There’s a saying that a conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged—and a libertarian is a conservative who’s been arrested. The more varied experiences you have or hear of from others, the more you realize how complex the world is and how over-simplified most ideologies are. Then the bickering in the media is revealed to be so extremely shallow that you can’t even stand hearing it anymore. We mostly argue over trivialities reflected in funhouse mirrors.

Disconnect from the blah blah and focus on yourself, your family, and your local community. Let everybody else lose their minds over the media-stoked churn. Most of it isn’t real anyway. @KryptoBlok @xianc78 Sorry for the late reply. I don’t think they’re afraid of it. They’re just bureaucrats. And bureaucrats derive their life force from consuming freedom. It doesn’t even matter what the subject is.They didn’t really care about Scaled Composites’ SpaceShipOne. But it was small potatoes and not worth the effort. Space X is a vendor for payload launches, both for governments and businesses. That’s worth influencing, just like Microsoft or other vendors.

@MartinDeLaToot Hamilton was plotting and lying about it the whole time though. He claimed the more vague phrases in the Constitution didn’t really give any extra power to the general government. As soon as the ink was dry, he immediately started claiming those phrases meant exactly what the anti-federalists feared. They started chipping away at state sovereignty right from the start. It did take a while for it to get really bad though.

@CSB The problem is the UK and EU erecting trade barriers and travel restrictions. You can quite easily eliminate them without establishing these giant international bureaucracies, which are Faustian bargains.

@useless_idiot @CSB Yes, you need governments on both sides to stop sticking their nose in where it doesn’t belong. Trade agreements are the twisted Twilight Zone form of that where you get a little bit of freedom in some ways while giving bureaucrats control over your lives. That’s why I called it a Faustian bargain.

@CSB @kravietz It was a core argument of the handful of people who believe in freedom. They were overridden by the bureaucrats. States aren’t conscious beings and don’t have “interests.” The individual human beings that run them do though: gaining power and ruling over you like cattle. They just convince you that their lust for power has something to do with your safety and prosperity. It doesn’t.

@CSB @kravietz @useless_idiot Voting and communicating does nothing when the nature of power is corrupting though. We have the same scam going on here in the US. They enslave us with smug grins on their faces knowing there aren’t enough people awake to the dangers of power to stop them. I know it’s not going to change. But it galls me so much that I have to do something to feel better. And the only thing I can do is keep ringing the bell of radical individualism and freedom.
