@CarlCravens The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the long-term answer (for both email and other open protocols like ActivityPub) should really be capability-style individualized addresses.Firefox Relay is a simple example of bolting this kind of thing on to email: https://relay.firefox.com/...though really it's better from a UX perspective if it's built right into the platform you're using, so e.g. filters can be automatically created

@cwebber Looking forward to it!Not looking forward to waking up at an absurd hour to start watching FOSDEM talks though... feels like all the interesting conferences are on European timezones :P

@heluecht @cwebber Yeah. Thankfully so much can be done asynchronously, and at least between the Eastern US and Western Europe there's at least some good overlapping hours.(Or crazy people like me can just wake up at 4 AM! :P)

@CarlCravens Out of curiosity I looked up when the first zsh release was... 31 years ago!Honestly these days I mostly use it out of apathy, I already have to adjust to macOS for work and it's now the default there... still use bash on all my personal Linux machines

@CarlCravens The worst part of modern videoconferencing life is that people not wearing headsets makes things awful for *everyone else* and not themselves.

@CarlCravens Yeah - boom mics are great (and I love mine) but even just wearing headphones makes a huge difference.

@CarlCravens Email is very alive in certain parts of the FOSS world. LKML being the obvious example, but I'm in a few other communities for which email is the primary method of communication. (Often with IRC on the side as well.)I wish it were more common, but outside those communities... yep, most email that's addressed to me specifically is one-way these days.

@th @SuperDicq I like the idea of those, but I think the Dutch have hit on a pretty good solution for travel within dense enough areas since then anyway with their bicycle infrastructure!

@CarlCravens To be fair I didn't know about that bit of ImageMagick until ~1y ago. But also the first time I needed to mass convert images I'd probably google "image convert CLI" and it's not that hard to find.

@civodul I would respond to this in more detail on the mailing list if I were in a position to do so but: a similar risk exists with GitHub commit hashes. GitHub consolidates forks of a repo on their backend, so you can refer to the URL of the upstream project but with a commit from your fork.If you're not extra careful in review, you can end up pulling in malicious code that's not actually in the upstream repo.

@cwebber @rysiek It's a bit ironic for this project in particular to complain about this. Like, it's *all about* running software in a different way than it was intended to run!
