@jonty this is fiiiine. bluesky is filled with very smart people and therefore they don’t need to participate in open standard groups before they just invent their own!

@julian thank you so much for pointing me at that FEP! The discussion had seemed very forum use-case specific at first glance, but after re-reading it, I can definitely see how this applies to followers-only and circle-addressed posts and replies on @frequency @trwnh - you mention a mastodon PR in that thread; could you point me to that? I see that mastodon is using the context for conversation threads already, but I don't think it can adjust audience of replies based on that context

@j12t and that didn’t happen to them on twitter? I mean I’m sure it doesn’t anymore since many ppl left… but it must have before. Remind me how is that any different than a Republican refusing to show up for a town hall so they don’t have to deal with getting yelled at?

@strypey I’m super interested to see what model ends up working well for you! Subscriptions are hard and expecting everyone to have one can exclude the very folks that need an alternative place the most. I have yet to see if my group / family subs are the right way to approach it.

@strypey @bonfire I looked into it a while ago when they were still early days and wasn’t sure it was quite suited for my needs back then given its focus on researchers, but it has come a long way since then! I need to play around with it again and see if it’s a better fit now. Thanks for the suggestion!

@frequency now fully supports FEP-7888 as of yesterday! (It has been generating outbound context since the beginning of the year, but I just finished fetching all remote replies from the context as well.)https://github.com/jesseplusplus/decodon/pull/188I'll hold off on trying to upstream this to Mastodon until after the 4.4.0 release to make sure I'm not conflicting with anything they changed.

@skinnylatte great shot! I always loved this building for its funky shape - had no idea about the history!

RE: https://mastodon.social/@andrewnez/115672824196543078As someone who used to work for GitHub, this makes me unbelievably angry. We refused to build something like Actions for a very long time, despite many requests for it, because of the complexity of the security implications. I knew when it was announced not long after I left that there was NO WAY it could have been built the right way. This is what happens when an engineer-led org is replaced by political hacks cosplaying as engineers- they greenlight insecure shit and shut down legit concerns.

Unpopular opinion: you don't need more willpower. You need better designed apps.New blog post about the problems with digital detoxes: https://frequency.leaflet.pub/3mbezkaxwhk27

So many of us feel addicted to the endless doomscrolling we seem to get sucked into and want to find ways to be more disciplined about our screen time in the next year. A popular resolution each new year is to do a "digital detox"... https://frequency.leaflet.pub/3mbezkaxwhk27/l-quote/1_0-1_230#1_0

The issue with digital detoxes is that it puts the blame on us - it suggests that the issue is just that we have insufficient willpower and we could put our phones down at any time if we really wanted to.This completely ignores the deliberatively manipulative design of the apps we open again and again compulsivelyhttps://frequency.leaflet.pub/3mbezkaxwhk27/l-quote/5_0-5_316#5_0

There are literally 1000s of engineers, product managers, and behavioral researchers whose job it is to design the apps we use to be as addictive as possible !!https://frequency.leaflet.pub/3mbezkaxwhk27/l-quote/6_0-6_158#6_0

But this begs the question: if the apps we use every day to keep in touch with our friends and family were designed with the goals of connection and healthy communication in mind, would we [...] need to take a break from them in the first place?https://frequency.leaflet.pub/3mbezkaxwhk27/l-quote/7_0-7_338#7_0
