Some of the best commentary I've read:"I canceled my Disney+ subscription last night, along with hundreds of others — maybe even thousands. It felt good, but I’m not dumb enough to think that it will *do* any good. I canceled my Amazon Prime subscription when Jeff Bezos dismantled the Washington Post. I cancelled my Spotify subscription years ago over Joe Rogan’s anti-vax comments. It made no difference because these are billionaires making billion-dollar deals, and my monthly subscription is not going to put a dent in it.""Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers still have jobs because Comcast — the owner of NBCUniversal — has not yet needed FCC approval for anything. But if and when they do, Comcast will throw Fallon and Meyers directly under the bus, too, because at this point, they make less for the corporation than it would cost them to fight off the federal government."https://www.pajiba.com/tv_reviews/they-will-come-after-saturday-night-live-next.phph/t @bicmay #JimmyKimmel #Disney #uspol #censorship

For #Caturday: This is the cat who, for three years, would dash out of my office the moment I entered. Then about seven months ago, for unknown reasons, that all changed. You can see how (not) stressed out Tennessee was last night, sharing the office with me.#CatsOfMastodon #cats

Yay, mask mandates are returning to many healthcare facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sadly, most of these only involve healthcare providers, not patients and visitors. (And I wish they were year round, but something it better than nothing.) https://www.sfchronicle.com/health/article/bay-area-mask-mandates-21088785.php or https://archive.md/VFpwBNot mentioned in the article: Santa Clara County has a standing mask requirement for everyone, each year, from November 1 to March 31. That’s not my county, but it’s right next door, and one of the facilities I often use is in that county. I timed my last cataract surgery to fit within that November-March window.https://publichealth.santaclaracounty.gov/diseases/covid/health-order-requiring-use-face-masks-patient-care-areas-health-care-deliveryh/t @DenisCOVIDinfoguy#MaskUp #sfba #CovidIsNotOver

@bbsmooth They're adorable! Congratulations to them and to you and your wife.I'm curious why you finally had a foster fail after all this time. If you're OK with sharing, why these two fluffballs vs. all the others?

@bbsmooth Ah, very similar to reason I did *not* get a kitten this time around, but rather a 13-year-old cat.

@tm_baumgartner Well, Mastodon is full of cat lovers. And thank *you* for all the amazing work you do with the kittens. The least the rest of us can do (as finances allow) is send along some food.

One of the more fascinating things I’ve read recently!https://www.wired.com/story/scientists-thought-parkinsons-was-in-our-genes-it-might-be-in-the-water/ or https://archive.vn/ZpiKS “The health you enjoy or don’t enjoy today is a function of your environment in the past,” says Ray Dorsey, a physician and professor of neurology at the University of Rochester. Your “environment” could be the refinery a town over, the lead in the paint of your mother’s home, the plastic sheath of the Hot Pocket you microwaved in 1996. It is air pollution and PFAS and pesticides and so much more.andAfter a century of putting genetics on a pedestal, the geneticists have some surprising news for us: The vast majority of chronic disease isn’t caused by our genes. “The Human Genome Project was a $3 billion investment, and what did we find out?” says Thomas Hartung, a toxicologist at Johns Hopkins. “Five percent of all disease is purely genetic. Less than 40 percent of diseases even have a genetic component.”h/t @mmalc @jgarber#health

Over the weekend, did you see the much-shared story on Reddit by a supposed whistleblower? It started like this: "I’m a developer for a major food delivery app. The 'Priority Fee' and 'Driver Benefit Fee' go 100% to the company. The driver sees $0 of it. I’m posting this from a library Wi-Fi on a burner laptop because I am technically under a massive NDA. I don’t care anymore."Well, it was a fake.https://www.platformer.news/fake-uber-eats-whisleblower-hoax-debunked/#journalism #AI

@ewen I didn't pick up on the off-ness, but I've become more cautious of sharing reports without sourcing I feel is reasonably reliable. And sometimes waiting for further reporting after the first splash. Also, this was getting so much play that I didn't see any reason for me to share it, too. And that sure worked to my advantage this time. Yeah, we all need lots of skepticism nowadays. Between AI garbage and an administration that lies constantly, there's lots to make us skeptical, sadly.

Here’s Spain, taking a very different approach to immigration than most other countries. While other countries have moved to tighten entry requirements and expel undocumented migrants, Sánchez has welcomed them, a stance also aimed at countering the aging of one of the world’s longest-lived populations.“I’ll say it clearly. No one is expendable in Spain. On the contrary, we lack people,” Sánchez said earlier this month. “Faced with the choice between being a closed and poor nation, Spain is opening itself to the world to ensure prosperity.”#Spain #immigration
