@fatboy DuckDuckGo has been my goto for and while search results have, on the whole, degraded, it's perfectly serviceable as a default.

@wolf480pl You might want to check out https://permanent.org, which has a "buy-once, store forever" model aimed at helping people preserve their personal digital lives. They're backed by a non-profit with an endowment whose main goal is keeping your data accessible.(disclaimer: they're a client of mine)

Every new wave of fediverse attention results in 95% of my feed being posts about mastodon vs twitter and how to use the fediverse and don't forget content warnings. It's like being trapped in the FAQ. It's like getting into ham radio and realizing every conversation is about the damn radios.

Filtering the word "Musk" seems to help a bit...

One of the downsides of federated social networking is that I haven't checked Mastodon in a few months because I forgot the URL of the server.

@amye @luis_in_brief I also typed twitter.com a few times, just from muscle memory.

@leo Put them on a list of parties US folks can't do business with. This would: remove from app stores, ban from gov phones, kick them off US server infra, and also ban US ad payments. This would prevent 99% of TikTok use by Americans, which is good enough. And nobody in congress cares about security updates.Banning TikTok is dumb, but it's workable enough and not mere saber rattling.

@leo Sure, the hundreds of US users who sideload would enjoy an ad-free TikTok, but at that level of adoption, the US got what it needed. And if the ban includes app stores run by US companies for users in other countries, you tank TikTok user numbers in a lot of places, not just the US.

I typed "I am in too many slacks" into duckduckgo and the results are all about how many pairs of pants one should own. Could it really be true that confusion about how many outfits to own is a bigger social menace than Slack proliferation?

Relatedly: how does one manage being in 10 different slacks? Is there a metaslack app? Do I just devote an entire Chromium window to 10 different slack tabs? How the heck to I figure out which of them just made that noise?

@juliaferraioli @kfogel I really like this idea: a service with simple reminders of principles most people know but easily lose sight of when in the midst of a complex decision-making process. And you can use it to nudge folks back on the path.I wonder if there is a way to deliver these messages gently and kindly, but also anonymously.

The feature I want from a search engine is shared block lists that remove annoying sites from results. Put all the LLM content farms on that block list. Add all the recipe sites that don't have recipes. Include all the sites that sell me things instead of teaching me things.Lower page rank for sites that have shopping carts or ads or trackers.I will pay good money for a subscription to a search engine that helps me find pages I want to see instead of delivering me to sites as a consumer.

@mjg59 From first-hand experience, I can say John is an amazingly conscientious board member. He won't reform the politics of FSF and he won't be the one to move it beyond RMS, but he will show up, dig in to the details, grapple with hard issues, require straight answers to practical questions, and listen to concerns.Adding John to FSF makes FSF better, perhaps not in the ways it most needs, but better.

@mjg59 I don't speak for EFF, but the public statement captures it: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/10/john-gilmore-leaves-eff-board-becomes-board-member-emeritusI personally enjoyed working with John, even when we disagreed. Every human is flawed (especially me) and comes with tradeoffs. Tradeoffs hit different over time and between different sets of people. Under the right circumstances, I would happily work with John again. In fact, I do --- Open Tech Strategies (my company) provides some services to ARDC, where he's on the board.

@gretared Pure speculation based on nothing: Some shows don't affect subscriber retention so they have little value on the premier streaming sites. Nobody dumps Peacock because it stops carrying old episodes of Punky Brewster, but somebody might watch it on a lower tier ad-supported service (like Pluto) where it faces less competition. So they pull it and sell it down market.

@kfogel Lineage aside, none of the non-android linux mobile distros supports pixel 4a that I know of. Ubuntu Touch and PostmarketOS were headed for Pixel 2 or 3, last I read about it. Maybe check if they made progress. I will soon buy a phone, at which point you can have my Pixel 2 for experiments. If you want your 4a usable as a backup device, lineage is the way to go. The non-android linux distros are not ready for use.'Non-android linux' feels like I'm making a point about 'GNU/Linux'...

@edgeoforever @dangillmor It's Co-op Ride. Nothing wrong with CURB, but it is not run by a driver-owned co-op.I've used Co-op Ride and it is not much different than any other cab app. It takes longer to get a car (15 minutes vs. 3 in my part of Manhattan), and prices are about the same. It's a pretty good alternative to other apps if you're not in a hurry.
