I have said this many times: if Ford, once the world’s number-one car maker, and for most of my lifetime, the world’s number-two, has a strategy to leave the global top 10, then it is very successful at executing it. It is one of the most cowardly car companies in the world, retreating segment by segment. GM is not much better: US car companies are too chicken to compete. The new US–Russia peace deal for Ukraine was probably drawn up by Ford and GM executives, because it is all about ceding.

@strypey James is spot on. I said over 20 years ago now that you have to occupy multiple media if you are to make a go of publishing, because online-only is not going to work. And that was when I first observed the advertising market becoming enshittified (not that that word was coined). I hate to say it but you could extrapolate those trends even then and get to where we are, sans LLMs.

@strypey Now I like where this is going. We should regulate the shit out of them. We should also tax the shit out of them.

@aral Hi Aral, this is from my friend Hamish Edwards, who started Xero:It's an interesting issue and frankly Xero should solve it.The fact they have not is surprising. When we started Xero it was never intending to be used by businesses that have 1000+ transactions a month. It was intended that the business owner would do a daily reconciliation of not more than 15-20 transactions a day.As Xero the business evolved it moved into areas like larger businesses that have more transactions.

Thank God for Siouxsie Wiles. Strange to find someone with a homonymous name but very different beliefs in the news.

Inspired by @epilonious and @ATLeagle q.v. https://toot.lgbt/@epilonious/115634572950570688: introduce yourself with 5 cars you’ve owned. 1978 Triumph Toledo 1500 (yes, there was such a thing in New Zealand updated to 1978 Dolomite spec) 1989 Citroën AX14 TRS five-door (modernist design though I was limited in footwear choices due to the small footwell) 1998 Renault Mégane RT coupé 2003 Peugeot 307 HDI 2010 Renault Mégane I-Music coupéNot sure what is next, so hard to find manuals. #weirdcarmastodon #QOTD

@IceNine @epilonious @ATLeagle I quite liked those CD132 Mondeos. It got so hard to get a manual here that I had to ship the last one in from the UK—probably not a smart thing to do again in 2025 given COVID-era shipping prices. So I just keep that car going … plus they mostly stopped making little coupés now, and I don’t want to go German.

@IceNine Eek, I get a bit worried about clutches. What are part prices like if you source via Ebay? I often get stuff directly when the mechanic has difficulties.

@IceNine I was getting stuff for my Renault pretty cheaply ex-UK. Sometimes would send to a friend who would then send on just to save a few pounds. Even bought one item for the first Mégane ex-Palestinian occupied territories! So many problems would be solved if we weren't driving slush boxes IMO!

@IceNine Nooo! The Sherpa was only meant to be a stopgap, not something that would survive into the LDV era.

@lightweight Thank you, Dave, going to take it easy today. Only one immovable hui, will see if I can sit in the conservatory today. I hope your family are feeling better—cool you did the Track though!

@lightweight Could just be your bodies having done a bit more than normal, leaving them susceptible to that random bug in the air. The drop in temperature yesterday did not help me … or the 5 a.m. start last Saturday!

@strypey I was about to ask you which legislation this came under. Horrible that is on the books. We need allies to repeal this—maybe the Greens? Post-James Shaw I never hear from them though … the Nats actually do better at replying, even when in opposition!
