@cosullivan I am much more curious, however, about the etymology of mammoth<-mammuthus<-mammouth<-мамант possibly Uralic *mē̮ŋ-ońt "earth-horn"Teeth with bumpy bits is far less salacious than nipple-toothed. New Latin was/is silly.

@gemlog @cosullivan Just rub it in. Here in Vancouver it has been dry, mostly sunny, for two weeks. And what do we have to show for it? Air Quality warnings. We need rain. Send some south, please.

@jeffcliff <winces and steps cautiously> So, what about this confuses you or is odd? The infants act, iirc, covers young people to age 19, and in Canada they may consent to their own health care from age 14 - occasionally (rarely) earlier when approved by a court.

@publius @cosullivan Sad but true story, when we were declaring landing at the Canada border, a camper from TX came in with supposed tourists, who did not have ID. Asked if they had guns, they said no. When their vehicle was searched a half-dozen handguns and a shotgun were found.I was blushing with embarrassment listening to the border guard explaining, patiently, that Canada is a different country, and that here they were foreigners. Which did not work.

@sir How 'bout @Yunohost ? sets up mail and XMPP server, infinite domains (provides suggested DNS), and you can choose from several optional webmail apps to self-host. Is not a docker.Worst issues: currently debian 9. When installed as OS on arm, *I* have been unable to use imap clients (there may be workarounds, but not discovered as yet.)#Yunohost

@publius @cosullivan @papa I do my 'slow cooking' in a crock in the oven. Which is how some of my recipe books from the very early 1900s instruct me (Yay Rumford Cookbook!)I would agree with @papa — never trust the dial. If your oven is what is giving you issues, get an oven thermometer. Do you know about the Gourmet Warehouse on Hastings? They have 'em.https://gourmetwarehouse.ca/kitchen-tools/timers-thermometers/

@switchingsoftware It looks great! Nice to have everything front-loaded. No, it is not the sexiest website, but it **is** super useful and usable.👍 👍

@cosullivan I assume you know that Indigo/Chapters sells Kobo devices. There are some nice paper stores in Vancouver; most are insanely over-priced. I rarely indulge, but last time I was at Paper-Ya on Granville Island they had Vergé de France, which was nice. Stashed.#paper #fountainpens #ink

@cosullivan My usual is the Granville at Broadway store. Their tech nook is ever shrinking, but near the front doors, one shelf facing the Broadway glass on the first floor. During the winter holiday buying season they had about 6-7 units, all inactive iirc.

Dear Leyland Cecco at #Guardian: I know you're writing for a #Brit #news site, and are based in #Toronto, but I thought you still might want to know that #Alberta and #Saskatchewan are *not* actually, "the two westernmost" provinces. Trying to stick the word "Prairie" in there doesn't help, either. Drop the -most; they're just #western. Dear #Alberta, #Saskatchewan Aramco is being sold off as Saudi divests from #oil; same with Norway SWF, major pension funds.Carbon-based energy made up roughly 15% of US stock markets by capitalization three years ago; it currently makes about 5%.It is not surprising to me; tech led to a glut of oil, while countries are phasing out #fossilfuel vehicles and investment banks refusing to underwrite FF development. So, why are you focused on oil to the exclusion of your other industries?

@cosullivan @gemlog <hmphs> Well, I know ever-so-slightly more than zero about Kindle eBooks. Something tells me you should be able to download a backup copy, and something else tells me you have undoubtedly gone through all the options and troubleshooting trees already, since *you* know more than zero about Kindle eBooks.Closest thing I have found in various torrent search systems is ""relaxed" MP3 - Roel C. Verburg - Javier Guzman - Comedy Explosion 320Kbps".

@cosullivan None of the above. Vancouver's own Odd Society's Wallflower gin.And if you must have a 'character' gin, they have an oaken edition occasionally.http://www.oddsocietyspirits.com/

@cosullivan No, but I was just looking at @Framasoft 's De-Googlify site and noticed FramaBookin, a #libre #book publishing site. Which got me super excited! except the site does not load for me. 😞 https://degooglisons-internet.org/en/list/https://framabookin.org

@cosullivan @Shufei Or, possibly, someone justifying the criminalization of poverty. It used to be the left hand for theft of a loaf of bread, first offense. Which means they knew there would be a second.
