@msh Same. I have a profile, but the resume is out of date and I don't feel like it's a useful platform to engage with. But I also feel like I'm obligated to have it sitting there, even though I basically don't do anything with it.

@wolf480pl Pretty much the first thing I do is format my storage media and get rid of the built in data management tools. That maybe doesn't help with the firmware, though. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know.

Growing up, we often had Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben's products at home. I realized Aunt Jemima was a racist trope relatively early on, but took way longer to realize Uncle Ben was also problematic. He was wearing a chef's outfit so I just assumed he was some professional chef and the whole "uncle" thing somehow went right over my head.I'm think about this because I see Uncle Ben's is now Ben's Original and won't use the image of "Uncle Ben" anymore.

Booking.com: Need a getaway, Adam?I mean, yes, I really do. But travel still seems irresponsible and risky, unless we're camping.

@thatgeoguy The kids news often covers "normal" topics, just in simpler language. They even do politics!

I've mentioned before that I miss Google Wave, but it's cool that they used that technology in Google Docs and such. I notice they seem to have used a very basic version of it in the new Google Chat, as well, since you can edit posts in the chat. It's definitely a different thing than Wave was (it's a much more traditional chat app), but it's nice to see that legacy continue.

@msh Yeah, I can see this. So many cancelled projects that didn't help sell ads or data well enough. Google Reader is probably the best example. It was, at the time, the best RSS reader around. Alas, RSS mostly avoids advertising.

Cell phone pricing makes no sense. My current phone is kind of crapping out and I'm not ready to attempt something like Pinephone as a daily driver, so I'm planning to pickup a new Pixel on a black Friday deal.Currently, both the 4a and 5 are on sale (only through the carrier, not unlocked, unfortunately). The 4a 5G, which is really what I'd like, is currently not on sale and actually costs 50% than the Pixel 5 as a result.

Despite the slower processor, the standard 4a seems like it's actually a better phone the the 5. But the 4a 5G would be pretty much perfect if it was priced appropriately. But part of me wonders if the 5 might be more future proof due to the better processor (which tests suggest is highly throttled to improve battery life...so maybe not; And I don't want to have to deal with Bluetooth headphones).Any thoughts from the hivemind?

@msh @squirrel My phone before the current one was a Zenfone and I quite liked it. Getting replacement parts after the display died was next to impossible, though, which is why I went with a different brand more recently (I was going to go Motorola, for ease of getting parts, but ended up getting a Nokia because it had a similar price but somewhat better specs and AndroidOne for updates direct from Google).I'm looking at Pixel mostly for the timely updates.

I decided to order a Pixel 4a. The Pixel 5 just seems to not be worth the price at all, even with the Black Friday discount and the Pixel 4a w/ 5G is overpriced through my carrier (currently priced for MORE than the Pixel 5 even with the sale price). My wife decided to also upgrade, despite her S8 being perfectly serviceable. Mainly, she wanted the better camera to capture the kids growing up over the next few years, which is fair.

Ah, the end of the year, when political parties come to ask for your support before the end of the fiscal year. I've received mail from the Green Party of Canada (I'm a member because I wanted to vote for the eco-socialists running for leadership; as yet undecided how involved I'll be given that my preferred candidates didn't win), the Alberta NDP and the Communist Party of Canada. I'm not really a Marxist-Leninist, but I don't fundamentally disagree with the CPC's program. Maybe I'll donate.

Recommendations for a wireless doorbell that isn't crap? Doesn't have to be "smart" and definitely shouldn't be Ring or anyone else who gives camera footage to cops.

@fssofdeath @msh I mean, it could literally be an off the shelf doorbell that just sends a signal the chime inside. But the generic ones from the hardware store suck and I've had too many instances of people standing at my door pressing the bell and not hearing anything inside (sometime dead batteries, but usually just pieces of junk that don't work properly). But a Pi type thing could be neat.

@joerebelloharley Way back when, I broadcast using Winamp and pushing it out over server space provided by a web forum/community I part of. Doing it that way came with a small built-in audience. I definitely didn't follow any rules. It was very much a pirate radio ethos. No authorization to play any of the songs we played, for example. I suppose these days most people would just make a podcast.
