And the flipside, actionable things:1. A button to punch the other user. I'm kidding.2. If you don't need millions of people to be able to see your post, don't post publicly; use messaging apps.3. Use self-destructing messages or IRC, plus a social contract to not record those messages automatically. To be consistent with my "indexing is fine" stance, this only applies to small groups where you can trust every person.

4.Small friend groups on messaging apps: Already happens naturally. Generally anything goes (depends on friend group) until someone voices discomfort, then if you want to continue, make another group or use DMs.Big topic-based forums: I don't know. Lock threads? Tell users to have their drama privately? Standard forum stuff.Big microblogging accounts: Split into multiple topics; a vent account (aka a spam account), an art account, etc.

(Alternatively, for #3, you can simply do it for yourself as a way to keep yourself calm; other people keeping a record of the chat history might not matter much.)

Trying out #SecureScuttlebutt. Seems like this is the logical conclusion of the HO-LI moderation proposed by @Wander.My logic: If blocking is primarily user-based (LI) and strong moderation is just to protect the instance owner (HO), then it'll be easier for everyone to just host their own servers, which SSB does out-of-the-box by syncing full histories (ala Matrix)? You can find me @avCM7XsbrbErkw0r8qa5O0nEgzMB+V7bKiwy1UAsijA=.ed25519#SSB

So. There seems to be two ways of doing fully decentralised networking with non-24/7 devices.First is to sync everything. Like a git repo, or Matrix (arewep2pyet), or SSB. I think. The second is to resend on fail. Like ActivityPub, or email. I think.Store-and-forward relays come into play somewhere I guess LOLHere's an effort to make a bridge, by the way. https://github.com/ssbc/ssb-db/issues/202BRIDGE ALL THE THINGS!

First thoughts: The discovery is not good. You need to discover users by other means. Google perhaps?

Aww, man. Similar sentiments here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34480864Guess it's back to making self hosting simpler for AP xD But that comes with similar discovery problems, doesn't it? I don't know how to deal with that; a centralised search engine perhaps (this can be done in SSB too I think?). Or Back To The Shared Instances. Here's another alternative, which Edward Snowden just joined: https://nostr.com/#nostr

One thing is true though; idealism is nothing unless you have better features, and it's likely that idealism would make it harder to have them.Or just Bridge All The Things and ignore that your preferred protocol is unpopular xD Which is fine too.

@a Hmm, I'm fine with having another protocol due to bridging being possible between open standards.I'll take a look at the links!

CC @smallcirclesWhat's the pros/cons of client-sided logic (using AP C2S, dumb server, smart client) and server-sided logic (using MastoAPI, smart server, dumb client)?I can come up with a few pros/cons for client-sided:+ Customisable if no control over server?+ Offline usage+ One account for all- Confusing?- Federated timeline search must be server-sided to avoid client overload- Space req.?- Need separate inter-device sync?#Fediverse #Mastodon #MastoDev #FediDev #ActivityPub

@smallcircles I'm finding a lot of discussion as to the details of implementation, but not a lot of discussion on the pros/cons of this.Searching "client-side vs server-side logic" doesn't do much as it's about websites. I try to find comparisons between IMAP email clients and webclients but to no avail either.

From https://www.zdnet.com/article/browser-vendors-win-war-with-w3c-over-html-and-dom-standards/:> An industry group made up the four major browser vendors, such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, have won a tug-of-war with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the standards body for the World Wide Web, effectively proving that without their support, the W3C's ability to regulate web standards is nonexistent.A glimpse into a possible future of the Fediverse.#Fediverse #ActivityPub #Mastodon #FediDev #SocialCoding
