The culture here is what we make it. Some of it is already great - content warning, boosting - fabulous. Some of it should evolve, and we all have to decide how. For example, personally, the "no self promotion" thing I've seen some people try to enforce here - I think that's silly. If you make something, whether with words or paint or a camera or out of wood, please share it. I'm going to share mine, including things I do for work.

There was so much good science and nature reporting this year. A few that stuck with me:"Inside the Legacy of Old Ephraim and Outlaw Animals" by Riley Black in Sierra: https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/inside-legacy-old-ephraim-and-outlaw-animals"Skies are Sucking More Water from the Land" by Ula Chrobak in SciAm: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/skies-are-sucking-more-water-from-the-land/"When Dams Come Down, Fish Come Home" by Sarah Trent in HCN: https://www.hcn.org/articles/north-fish-when-dams-come-down-fish-come-home"The Hunt for Big Hail" by Oliver Whang in NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/05/science/hail-weather-climate.html #science #nature #scicomm #journalism #bestof2022

Instead of tooting the Washington Post article about how the North Shore Leader broke the Santos story (as I've seen twice on my feed today), how about we link to the actual North Shore Leader? Support your local news, and when a scoop like this happens, support the small papers, local to you or not, that break them: https://www.theleaderonline.com/single-post/the-leader-told-you-so-us-rep-elect-george-santos-is-a-fraud-and-wanted-criminal

As far as I can tell, screenshots of Elon Musk tweets on this site are like Einstein quotes on the entire internet. At this point I'm surprised when I find a real one.One of the reasons #disinformation works so well on us is that we are willing to believe almost anything bad about someone we already (however justifiably) don't like.

New bat species just dropped. Well, not new-new.Pseudoromicia principis was first described as a separate species this week, based on specimens collected from Príncipe Island, west of Equitorial Guinea, more than 30 years ago. @elizamccarthy Not much really. I subscribe to HEATED and read it most of the time, but at this point, that's more of a news outlet than a newsletter, because there's a whole team. I think the last individual writer one I subscribed to was Chuck Wendig's, but that was a while back and really just a WordPress feed from his blog. I need to find some good ones to try, especially in the journalism space.

@elizamccarthy Thanks. I'm looking for broader I think. The issue I'm having is that every time I publish something these days, I have people I send it to individually and it's awkward and time-consuming, and I've had a few nice people ask if they could sign up to follow me by email. Mostly I just want to see who is doing it well, in science, broader journalism or even fiction, because if I do it, I want it to be something worthwhile to read.

@grammargirl I think kids are much more informed, but the quality of that information is, on average, worse. It seems a lot more possible to "know" something that is patently, provably false, but which you can point to sources to back up, now than before. I feel for kids growing up in this mis/disinformation soup. Even with the best intentions, there's a lot to wade through to get to good sources.

Of all the streaming services, the most unhinged by far is Britbox. You have two kinds of shows: gardening and murder. No middle ground. I respect that.

People in security and computing have been saying for years - there's no cloud. There's just someone else's computer.Right now, there's no AI. There's just someone else's work. Stop calling generative text and image programs AI. It's inaccurate and insulting. They are just the evolution of corporate creative theft that's been going on as long as media corporations have existed.

@tarkowski It's a fair point - simple, widely recognized terminology is important for advocacy. But it's a little like calling methane and associated hydrocarbons "natural gas". It's well-known by that name, simple to communicate, but by using it, we already cede the first victory to the companies who came up with that name as part of their marketing. The balance between accuracy and ease of communication is a really good point. Thanks for making it.

@grammargirl Any headline about that story that doesn't include the word "scam" feels like a bad headline. "I'm scamming hundreds of people using AI" is about the same length.

If you're not here or don't hear about Oregon politics: It's wild. GOP lawmakers in Oregon's Senate have been on a walkout to prevent abortion protections and other Democratic priorities from passing. But Oregon voters passed a ballot measure last year making any legislator that does this ineligible to run again. So now ten (TEN) state senators have made themselves lame ducks, in the hopes that they will get rescued by a lawsuit against the measure. https://oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2023/05/18/one-third-of-oregon-senate-now-ineligible-for-another-term-as-republican-walkout-continues/#ORPol #Oregon

Portlanders: There's been a sewage leak just upriver in Lake Oswego. Terrible timing, with heat getting into the 90s, but if you can avoid the Willamette today and tomorrow, you should.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/half-million-gallons-sewage-leak-oregon-willamette-river/#pdx #portland #oregon

Of the 74 newsroom layoffs at the LA Times, 57 are Guild members and several are union leaders. But I'm sure that's just a coincidence. #union #UnionStrong #journalism https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2023-06-07/los-angeles-times-newsroom-layoffs-merida-soon-shiong

Peak buttercup in the Oregon coast range. We did get a few drops of rain there today, but mostly my perfect outdoor work weather - a little sun, a lot of bright overcast, sea breeze, not too hot or cold. I'll go back to complaining about heat tomorrow, but today was good. #Oregon #PNW #CoastRange #flowers
