@nextcloud I do 'so much' with my Nextcloud. As a non IT person it only took a minute to set up.These are all the things I use it for:https://phillips.next-cloud.org/index.php/apps/cms_pico/pico/stuff/nextcloud-benefits

@art @Mastodon Musk has done wonders for the Fediverse. But I'm surprised there are still people on Twitter. They must really love Musk and his far right troll-iverse.

@rolle @downey @bagderIt doesnt matter who owns it or if it's open source. The one critical factor is "does it have an open protocol?" Does it interact with other services? Are developers free to choose, yet still be part of it?Closed centralised networks all stop caring and improving. Open networks see services improve as users switch to preferred ones yet remaining connected. Closed networks cause people to nag others to join, like they do on Facebook. Is this what we are seeing here?

I joined 18000 cyclists today for the hugely successful cycling demo. @zimzat @selea Yes. trying to use an instance as a special interest community is a big fail. It adds an artificial barrier for newbies joining. It fails for people who have more than one interest. It's "centralised" so the elitist "you have to join or we exclude you" again. You get every post from everyone on there, regardless of topic. And you won't get all the top people for that topic, as they already joined elsewhere.Pick an instance you like the name of, and has a middle number of users.

@wjmaggos @zimzat @selea Yes that would help people decide. It would also get the attention on non fediverse people. And lure them in to finally join. And it would also give a useful username if you are running a club or organisation related to that location.

@selea @zimzatI didn't say that. I'll break it down for clarity. If you don't join that instance, you don't get that local timeline to join in. That's the problem with centralisation. If you 'do' join the instance, you get 'everything' on the local timeline. Regardless of topic.

@atomicpoet Chris. This thread is a great example of the need to have real working "Special interest Groups" in the Fediverse. As I have no interest in games, I am now being spammed by a special interest topic, where you should be free to go into tiny details and totally nerd out, without spamming followers not interested in that topic. See Telegram Groups or Matrix Rooms.

@selea @atomicpoetI understand spam means a lot of unwanted posts. Which is what I and others, according to the vote, got.Now I'm happy that the others were keen on games. And for me it was just a bit of scrolling. But it was a opportunity to see first hand, an example of the problem of missing Group functionality.

@paulSure. And, as can be seen from the poll, people are interested in different things. But if you "follow" someone, you get everything, regardless of topic. It's a weakness in the "follow" concept. But this can be solved with the groups function.

@paulYou would Join a group of the topic of interest. There you will see all posts of all others who Joined that group. Those posts are only available inside the group. People get deep into discussions on some dog breed or microprocessor. They feel free to do so without boring friends not into that topic. And they get to know the others in the group really well.

@paul Spam is merely what lots of unwanted posts are called. Sure Chris meant well with it. I neither moaned or asked him to stop. I pointed out a classic example of the problem and explained the reason. The flaw lies with the system, which is already being worked on.Chris should feel free to post any topic, yet he felt he needed to do a poll. Another symptom of the problem. The aim is to have a lot of happy people and communities here.

@boilingsteam It seems the question is being interpreted differently. Such as:Have centralised platforms had a good influence for users as a whole? OR Have you grabbed some personal benefit from a centralised platform despite the harm it causes reinforcing monopolies, creating a barrier, and reducing people's choice?

@gocu54 @devinprater That sounds very different to the Linux I use. I'm sure there are nerdy versions, but I'm not a computer or IT person, and usability is very important to me as a mouse user. So command line or nerdy things are totally out of the question. In fact I like that I can choose a really good visual desktop system to suit me best. That's not so easy on Windows, which I have to use at work.Take a look.

@slashdot If the alien eggs, leftover from that planet, withstood the heat, they should start hatching just about now. And burrow up into the sewers. Worrying.

@tomjennings @jwildeboer I like 4 coloured pens. But I'm not a very legible writer. And for important things, I do like digital benefits like:Structuring notes in a tree to help me navigate to any topic.Having automatic backups for peace of mind.Copy pasting in and out to other places.Having this same info on every big screen PC, and the phone for when I'm out.Taking a picture and pasting it right in the right note, where it will be seen. All encrypted.

@tomjennings Yes. Rough sketches on scrap paper are great. I'll use 2D Inkscape or 3D CAD if I need to keep something. But doodling is also fun.
