@brandon There are both. But the latter is more what I had in mind. Think about black friday. It's profitable because are lurred in by whatever, they go insane in a frenzy of consumerism. Also, add to your list simple brand loyalty building.

@brandon And another: with big data, some sales are simply data gathering expeditions.

@kelbot Is there a way with Delta Chat to prevent the downgrade to unencrypted chat when another party uses a different client?

@brandon It was mentioned in a book I read... although I forget which. Perhaps Weapons of Math Destruction.

@kelbot They tout that adaptability as a selling point but it always struck me as dangerous.

@kev @stevenroose Good god, I know. Imagine if other historical moments wrote such letters about their moral failings.

@neb Warms my heart too. I wasn't expecting it to hit #fdroid for another week or so.Even if Moxie lives in a world in which data is universal, there are still plenty of places/people where SMS is the only dependable option. As far as I know, there's only a single dev--but lots of people making requests. He/she really deserves our support.

@kev @dvlI too would like a bit more info. My understanding is that it is centralized, prone to leak metadata, and easy to correlate data in order to deanonymize. I posted a link some time back to a discussion with the guy running Quad9. He was strongly against it, although they support it. Don't know what to make of that. Either way, the #DNS situation seems far from solved.

Uggghh! Trying to migrate wallabag from old VPS to docker on home server is absolutely maddening. Solution offered on Reddit: use sqlite rather than postrgres. C'mon.

@mike @kev That we want, can, or see no problem in talking to machines expresses the degree to which our imagination has already been subjugated to and shaped by machines.

@wuwei Voice/video works well on desktop, in my experience. Messaging and file transfer are a little rougher. It's certainly the closest thing we have to a #skype replacement. I use it with my parents, both of whom are not very tech oriented, without issue. And NAT traversal has been better than other SIP solutions. There is no way #matrix in its current form competes for that audience. On mobile, things are a bit different. For some poeple it eats batteries and there are notification problems.

@Kevin Thanks. Did not know about this. I've locked myself out of more than one site that simply truncates or doesn't digest things correctly, letting me think my password has been successfully changed when actually it's been mangled. Banks tend to be terrible in this regard.
