The general consensus appears to be that the problem is almost certainly dead NVRAM batteries. Apparently having bad/unstable NVRAMs can lead to all sorts of weird and wonderful issues.I ordered some new ones, so lets hope that that can fix it so I can still finish my #SunPCi mini documentary. (And create Linux drivers for them)#retrocomputing

A friend of my sister's needed a new laptop, but she has no money. So I went diving at the municipal dump, found an i3-5005U based laptop. Threw in 8GB of RAM that I literally pulled out of the trash, and a 128GB SATA SSD.Put #linux on it, ( #fedora if you must know) and the laptop is really surprisingly ... just fine for Youtube, Netflix, some letter writing. Literally trash! And it's honestly, fine. Installing updates takes a little longer than you'd want. But it's really 100% usable.

People's needs for PCs have really plateaued, this CPU is from 2015. Had I put in 16GB of ram and a better SSD it would have been able to do anything today except running games.Sad how many totally fine PCs that will do 100% of what people want, are just trashed.I wish there was something better to do to get these PCs back in use, and give them to people that need them. It's not even recycling, it's just... Giving it to someone else.#plannedobsolescence #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

I'll be giving two talks at #fosdem2026 !On Saturday on the main stage I will be giving a talk about developing a Microsoft Bob application, and what we can learn from it today. On Sunday I'll be talking about the history of MCI mail, the MEP2 protocol, and showing how it all worked at the time using my own reverse engineered server with contemporary email clients.Come see me yap about #retrocomputing #history and rover the dog.

@Linux the ladybird browser is built by a real... Piece of work in pretty much the worst way.I wouldn't trust him even a little bit. And certainty wouldn't expect them to ever release anything worth having. It's a political project, and not in the "GNU is a political project" sort of way.

@thomasfuchs It's a weird ebb and flow. It seems every ~10 years or so we go back and forth.1 Mainframes2 PCs3 Terminal servers4 Back to PCs5 VDI (as in individual desktop VMs on central hardware)6 BYOD. Everyone buys their own laptop (PCs again)7 Pay-as-you-go AI from OpenAI/AntropicThere's some more home pc stuff stages as well, like the "gaming in the cloud" thing.Corporations just really want us to rent computers. But they always, eventually, become too cheap to rent out.

For as long as I can remember my dad made oliebollen for new year's. It was always a nice day where we all hung out in the kitchen, cooked, and talked.Since my dad died I've been doing it by myself. This is always the day I miss him most. Happy New years everyone. ♥️

@jpm @mos_8502 we could probably replace that pretty easily. Not sure how we could convince HP to spend the money to do the legal legwork and then the engineering to actually release the sources tho. They have like 0 incentives to do it. I think if we're ever going to see another open source Unix it'll be AIX.IBM, as an institution, cares about its legacy in a way that most corporations don't. I think that if we're going to convince anyone it'll be them. 🤷‍♀️

@foone That sounds like tired capacitors to me. I have other systems that behaved exactly like that until I replaced their caps.

@ekuber I do understand the tradeoffs. In my mind you develop software *for users* generally speaking. So using tools that improve the life of users vs developers is, in my opinion, the "better" option.Containers, build-time downloads, static linking, these are all developer centric but are user hostile.OS level package management is good for users, but developers don't like having to wait... :)

Dear #retrocomputing nerds, I'm pretty close to done with my reimplementation of the MEP2 mail protocol. This allows such fine email clients as "The Wire", "Mailroom for MCI", "Lotus express", and last but not least "Emma" from functioning again (with a suitable modem emulator)I've written this thing as part of my #fosdem talk on MCI (come see me on Sunday!)I was thinking tho, would there be some interest in me running a real node, with SMTP interop? Would people want to use it?

The idea would be you could get an MCI number, and use these old clients (or write your own!) or access the same mailbox via IMAP.You'd get an address like 111-2222@mcimail.net with a possible alias.Anyone in need of an email address they could use from DOS?How about a (probably paid for obvious reasons) version of the old "send an email via the post or fax" options? I think I can't resurrect Telex I'm afraid. 😀

@foone did the manual opine on whether it was safe for babies and/or for eating?
