@nixCraft It's morally and socially wrong, as well as on every other level, except monetarily. It's a logical outgrowth of #capitalism and its incentives of #shareholder value maximisation. As long as we're willing to accept #economic interests to trump human concerns without unrelenting pushback, it will continue on ever more aggressively.

@stux @mks_h That’s an attitude I can respect. It’s absurd to even ask for signing NDAs while looking to join an open, federated network. I know it’s standard corporate practice but that fact alone should have resulted in a united dismissal of any talks.

I’m continually impressed by how well #FreeBSD runs on my #RaspberryPi 3 as a #DNS and #WireGuard server. It just keeps chugging away, day after day, month after month, year after year. It is the best kind of boring. I remember a very different experience with #Raspbian. I don’t know, #Linux distributions just *feel* a lot more … uneven. Like duct-taping stuff together versus building a thing with intent. Both work eventually. One is beautiful.

@nixCraft If you can indeed do all that, you have decades of experience and you’re starting a company of your own, not work for an employer. If you think you can do all that, you’re dangerous. If you know you can’t do all that, you’re not getting hired. Most IT recruiters seem to live in a world of fairies and make-believe.

Just confirmed with #Hetzner support that they have no plans to support #FreeBSD on their #arm64 cloud instances. Once again, #Linux continues to accelerate towards a server OS monoculture. Anyone know of affordable alternatives that do support this?

@selea @ptribble From this article it’s not at all clear to me what this Tribblix even is, why I would use it, what it does and how this applies to my situation. Maybe it’s just me or it’s to late but it appears to assume quite a bit of information on the reader’s part.

@selea @ptribble How does this help me find an affordable arm64 cloud instance and run FreeBSD on it?

@nixCraft For some reason, I have never seen a BSD user who would suggest using their OS of choice in that manner, jokingly or in earnest. Linux users apparently want everything to become Linux. Also: have fun with tech support.

@lehtimaeki @WTL @oil @NerdRunner @heyzen @runblessing @hbauer Thank you all so very much for the encouragement! The run went great. I'd expected to finish around 4:45:00. Official measured time was 4:37:12. Body feels healthy, no pain today. Immediately after finishing, I knew I'd do this again – and I will. #running

It’s raining all day today. I’m trying to get me motivated to run during a window when it stops. #running

@stefano Wait, so changing fstab from rw to ro is really all that’s involved? No ramdisks or anything?

@stefano I never knew that, thanks for sharing. Will try this out tomorrow morning. Sounds like the perfect operating mode for my Raspberry Pi VPN+DNS server.

@stefano @Anniiii I 100% guarantee you Wi-Fi will not work. That, along with several other incompatibilities lead me to abandon FreeBSD on portable Apple hardware pretty quickly.

@stefano @iasen_kostov There’s something regarding manually copying boot loaders when using EFI and ZFS before upgrading the pool in the release notes. However, the instructions are incomplete/vague. Errata is empty. Sadly pretty careless for something that can break your system boot.

@mms Wouldn’t that be something your WM environment should provide, not the OS? Last time I tried, Wayland worked but x11 would freeze doing that. In Sway, it’s just a couple of lines in config.

@futurebird > Don't people want to know what ingredients are in their food? The depressing but hardly surprising answer to that is: no. I’ve been a vegan for 27 years now. In the past, I regularly encountered people who actively asked me (sometimes preemptively) to not tell them what ingredients are in certain foods and how the sausage gets made – for fear they wouldn’t want to eat it any more. That amount of wilful ignorance is incomprehensible to me but unfortunately widespread.
