My advice to anybody coming here from Twitter to escape the Musk purchase:This is not Twitter. Take some time to feel out the vibe, follow the examples of people already on here.Be mindful of others and use content warnings. Caption your pictures. Don't be a tool. This is not a walled garden. The site you first sign up to may just be training wheels. You might find another that suits your interests better, no problem. Mastodon.social isn't for everybody and that's fine.#welcome

@boss Yeah, the good old days when Twitter was decentralised and open source. No, wait. It's actually better than Twitter ever was! 😆

@boss @ProfessorCode That's fair, on the level of user interactions. The sarcasm was all on my part, and probably uncalled for!

@entreprecariat I think at The Onion you really need to have a clue to make the level of satire that they do. Maybe he can get a job at Fox News, covering sports.

"Where are the corporate fediverse instances," you ask? Well, here is one of them: https://sself.co/aboutApparently they promise to turn you immortal through social media.

And again, it's frustrating how the supercapitalist cryptocurrency bunch co-opt leftist and anti-corporate phrases like "decentralisation", "coop", etc.I mean, who would think that "Social Coop" is the name of a crypto investment scheme? Social sounds good, and cooperatives are too, right? #NotAllSocialCoops, apparently. There was an early promise that maybe blockchain technologies could be used for transparency and accountability in civic or grassroots decision making, but since the coin craze took over the field it's been rampant speculation bullshit all the way down.

The best lithmus test to show whether a project is just crypto woo is how early and how frequent they use the term "web3", which is essentially hot air.As a very good explainer by @rysiek puts it: "What is web3? Anything you can dream of — as long as its proponents need not define it too clearly."https://strangematters.coop/web3-vs-fediverse-decentralized-internet/"In other words, web3 is less a technology project for decentralizing the internet, and more an economic project for a select few to profit from: those who acquire crypto-assets early or have the resources and knowledge to [mint crypto tokens]"...

.@openrightsgroup @Mer__edithAs long as Signal remans a data silo and a single point of failure, encryption should be the least of its users' worries...Decentralise now.

Oh hey, this again. If you're posting screenshots of text and don't add that same actual text as an image description, you're shitting on visually impaired users. Please carry your own ableist ass to the trash.

What really gets me about the "95% of NFTs are now worthless" reveal is, each and every one of those piece of shit ape drawings required a nontrivial energy consumption to generate initial, theoretical value. Most of this energy ultimately came from fossil fuel and coal.Collectively, they basically took a huge bite out of global measures to minimise our environmental impact — to generate worthlessness.Late stage capitalism, ladies and gentlefolk.[Edited because my spellcheck is also worthless]

Quick question, what is the best way to defederate from colonialist Australia after this shameful voice referendum result? My first impulse was to mute all Aussie instances but I don't want to silence indigenous users.

Calling in everybody who set up a markdown-based document workflow!I'm looking to replace my current, fragmented office document work with one entirely markdown based. At the moment I lay out presentations in Scribus, write notes and scripts in my markdown editor of choice, and finish up articles, reports, etc in LibreOffice Writer. It's all getting a little unwieldy, especially the markdown to Scribus bit can definitely be slimmed down. And I already use Pandoc to export from Markdown to odt, docx, and pdf, so centering all my stages of writing, as well as presentations in on the same editor only makes sense. An initial search has given me some ideas on existing solutions and how to implement them, but let me hear your experiences and recommended resources!ATM I see the outline of a process where I set up Pandoc templates for print and screen sizes,Different Pandoc stylesheets for professional and private use,User templates for most used document types (in ~/Templates), with course and context relevant front matter preconfigured.I'm currently in higher education (humanities, so have no great use for rendering formulae, diagrams or equations) and use Linux* for whatever difference that makes in configuring templates, etc.#markdown #pandoc #hivemind #fedibrain #workflows #productivity * Arch BTW
