#retrocomputing activity today:The fans in the cisco 2811 router were way too loud and I exchanged them for modern silent ones. These spin slower than the original fans, which caused IOS to complain with three warning lines every 30 seconds:Jan 2 12:00:30.119: %ENVMON-4-FAN_LOW_RPM: Fan 1 service recommended I found https://www.techidiots.net/notes/fake-fan-sensor, a simple circuit based on a 555, a resistor and a capacitor. Now the router is pleasantly silent. One 555 can drive all 3 fan tach inputs.

#retrocomputing activities today:Fixed the floppy drive of the Macintosh 512k and found that it has 2 MB and a SCSI port. The SCSI port is detected, but the BlueSCSI drive is ignored. Still some cracked solder joints on the analog board, it seems.Collected the body parts of the Robotron Z9001 that I'm going to pass on after having given up on it.Tested the latest version of Identify ][ to see whether it recognizes the https://github.com/hanshuebner/AppleII-VGA card that I'm building. It mostly does.

A++ would recommend. Was mache ich nun mit dem Samstag? Will ich mich weiter mit der GitHub Workflow Run API herumärgern?

The moo gun is all the rage, but I was glad to have this tool around when I had to desolder 48 DIL-16 RAM Chips from the IBM 3274-51R today. Seven of them tested bad, which gives me some hope. I'm not out of the weeds yet, though, as I still need to get the solder out of most of the holes. The board is very difficult to work with. #retrocomputing #ibm #mainframe #soldering

@penguin42 It is a machine to connect 3270 Terminals to a mainframe. This unit has a V.24/RS232 uplink, which can be configured for SDLC or X.25.

@Ardubal @louis I use a schema creation script that is in git. I have been looking into automatic migration upgrade tools like migra and pg-schema-diff, but for my single developer side projects, manual migrations are mostly sufficient.

@penguin42 @Markus The caps leak, and due to its poor base material, the PCB becomes partially conductive. The leakage is often so bad that the whole board is covered with black goo. I had mine work again after a thorough clean and recap, but fail after a couple of months again with the SENS signal no longer going high.

The synchronous serial interface of my VAX failed and needed repair - Not a fun task given the amateurish setup in my basement. After extracting the machine and fixing a couple of cracked solder joints on the DSW42-AA, it is now back on TELEBAHN. After re-assembly, the setup looks neater than before, but I still dread the next time something fails. #retrocomputing #x25 #vax #sparc

The sheer amount of money that is going into AI infrastructure is terrifying. It is not that I believe that these systems are inherently evil. What scares me, however, is that even though AI is not delivering on most of the promises that its proponents make, it exists in a colossal form now. What is it going to do for people and the economy? What is it actually good for? What problems does it solve? The answers that I see are dwarf-like when compared to the resources spent to build it.

@LaF0rge While I'm in the systemd haters camp, I also tend to acknowledge that the older the legacy gets, the smaller the fun becomes when implementing things in the operating system space. It is hardly fair to tell those who love contributing today that they have to support all the crap that we've learned and lost on the way here.

@Kroc You're telling me that HID manufacturers would have been willing to put $20 firewire controller chips into their mice and keyboards and use high speed capable signaling cables, but it was the licensing cost that they shied away from? Interesting.

@tomjennings @Kroc I'm not saying that silocon cost was plummeting. In hindsight, it is easy to say that silicon complexity would not have mattered because of that. In reality, however, design decisions are always dominated by the actual availability of technology at the point of time of desired market entry.

@Archivist @Kroc It is easy to make "good" things given unlimited resources. Good engineering yields things that work within existing constraints.
