@wjmaggos we already have favorite counts and threading, can't any client already do this? Granted, any instance can "cheat" by faking fave counts, but that's the nature of fedi.

Having to block one or two nutjobs from a giant server is maybe worth preserving access to their large population.We may all draw the line between “a few assailed slip through” and “they are fostering a toxic culture” in different places, but I doubt either zero tolerance or full tolerance are useful.Nuance is a problem, of course, because most users just wanna tweet and not think about federation.

@jeff @alasaarela @osma I think we need to name the “functionality” of an internet presence that plugs in to the world of ActivityPub services. E.g. if Flickr federated, how will it be explained to the public? They wouldn’t become Mastodon.I hope we have a lot of interesting experiments ahead for how we manage this diversity. A lot of Twitter users loved it because it gave them a central online identity, I hope we can somehow offer that to people without the centralization. :-/

@alasaarela @jeff @osma indeed. I set up a personal server with this in mind (I will pipe feeds from other sites into accounts on it). My personal identity, then, is the second half of @account@server.But I don’t think this scales, without a Big Tech player enabling it…altruistically?

@TruthSandwich @thomasfuchs fine, let me re-phrase.As a politically-involved American who spent almost 40 years living in the Midwest and West Coast before moving to Europe and spending 10 years still following US politics closely while learning about the Dutch, British, and other European systems, I find this to be a reasonable take.
