Another thing we did last weekend in Berlin: redeployed Cinnamon’s seasonal clock, with some adjustments so that there are matching emoji for every hour of the day: https://seasonalclock.org(this is a global clock where it’s the same ‘hour’ everywhere around the world, e.g. I am posting this at blossom hour, no matter where you are. It is a scheduling toy for an existing group of friends.)

Made something a bit different today: a colour-blindness friendly visual hash.In reality it just visualises bytes, with 256 possible options for each cell, so any hashing function can be used with this (or none at all, just put in bytes).Putting a little process diary for this in the replies.

My Deno extension squeaked into the most popular extensions of the past week for @panic's Nova, just ahead of TypeScript 🥲#CelebrateYourVictoriesNoMatterHowMeaningless #WatchOutTypeScriptOnly47331DownloadsBehindYou

“Put another way, rapidly growing, dramatically underfunded networks characterized by overtaxed small moderation crews and underpowered safety tooling present a massive attack surface. Believing that the same kinds of forces that undermined the internet in Myanmar won’t be able to weaponize federated networks because the nodes are smaller is a category error—most of the advantages of decentralized networks can be turned to adversaries’ advantage almost immediately..”https://erinkissane.com/meta-in-myanmar-part-iv-only-connect

Good news! #NLnet will be supporting The Earthstar Project once again with another round of funding from @NGIZero Core. We’ve pulled together a wonderful team (with @glyph and Aljoscha Meyer) to build a Rust implementation of the Willow protocol. This is a novel sync protocol which pushes the envelope on distributed deletion, permissions, and memory and bandwidth efficiency. https://nlnet.nl/project/WillowSync/

I’m witnessing a frequent conflation of “don’t look away” with “subject yourself to a 24/7 media stream of atrocity and suffering”. Speak out, take action — but don’t traumatise yourself. It helps no-one.

Prompted by reading two articles in as many days where the author is clearly vicariously traumatised (i.e. not being able to stop themselves imagining horrific things happening in normal, safe settings), and railing against people around them telling them to give social media a break.

Having all our lives on pause, the constant uncertainty about how serious the sickness is, not knowing if you can even *prepare* for a few days you dared to imagine enjoying. It. Just. Sucks.

Kagi using Brave aside, it’s kind of something to see an official representative of a search engine write the following:“Using a technology is not an endorsment of anyone's political views.”“Politics finding its way into tech is one of the reason we do not have innovation any more.” "It is easy to get distracted. Google, Microsoft, Mojeek and Yandex all may not align with our mission to humanize the web in their current form … but now by using their technolgy, they are contributing to our mission.” https://nileane.fr/@nileane/111705532073853768

Perhaps you are not tacitly endorsing someone’s views by using their technology, but rather than appropriating their tools to your mission, your mission is instead bent to the shape of theirs.

One of the most exciting possibilities of distributed protocols are networks where all participating devices are powered down most of the time.e.g. distant friends syncing data over a solar powered server which is only on when the sun is up.
