@jbond @edgeoforever @GayDeceiver Oh, Mastodon is great in the sous vide. You can cook it straight from frozen. Chainsaw out a portion, vacuum seal it (a clean shopvac and heavy duty zipper bag should work), and dunk it in a hot tub maintained at 130F for about a month. It's nice and tender!

@GayDeceiver I know as an anthropologist that that is a radical oversimplification, and putting the end of "goddess culture" down to encountering "middle eastern cultures" ignores the large number of middle eastern goddess-worshipping matriarchies.

@GayDeceiver Some. It still states that Europe was all one society, which was neither true nor feasible. I suspect you're basing this on Marija Gimbutas, who had a lot of great stuff to say about the ways male-dominated anthropology swept evidence of veneration of women under the rug, but whose conclusions about a single pan-European goddess culture were based on fairly tenuous interpretations of the evidence. There's some great updates to feminist archaeology theory in "In Search of God the Mother" by Lynn Roller, which focuses on Cybele, and has some good info on the Gallae and the history of goddess worship in Anatolian Phrygia.

@GayDeceiver Sorry if this is coming off as a lot of pedantry. There is an undercurrent of Eurocentrism in the story of the pan-European goddess culture that rubs me the wrong way, as a trans Earth-venerating Jew.

@Tilopa How sad is it that parents in much of the country are thinking about how their trans or gender non-conforming students might be brutalized at college, and having to make their academic decisions based on a real concern for their safety. DeSantis is such a cad.

@Tilopa The papers--especially if you're reading the Daily Mail--are propelling the anti-trans rage on purpose to sell clicks. Even the NYT was doing this to the extent that there was a huge outcry from LGBTQIA folks and allies. Sure, there are the odd pedophiles, most btw cis het people since most people are cis and het. Readers of the news need to be responsible too. And it's exhausting, over and over, to be told that we're worthy of hate, that we should be silent or risk death, that children who are trans should kill themselves rather than be who they are.

@Tilopa My kids are partially in public school and part homeschooled... because the messages they get about gender in public school are overwhelmingly "boys are boys and girls are girls, and we only talk about straight people". We know, actually, that there are lots of ways to be boys and to be girls, and I want my kids--both boys incidentally--not to get the message that they should be into guns and violence just because they're boys. But I would be equally unhappy if I thought they were being pushed to be gay or to be trans, even though I am trans and I know for me it happens to be a good thing. But there is nothing like the kind of pressure you're describing going on.

@Tilopa Every trans person I have ever talked to wants people to be safe being trans or nonbinary or cis or however exactly they are. The perception is out there because there is a strain of thought that sees being trans at all as a fate worse than death. Unfortunately there is a group of people actively working to bring about the end of transgender people by any means they can. They think you can keep people from being trans by making sure they never hear about being trans. It doesn't work that way; you just get miserable, isolated people who are much more prone to depression and suicide. But suicide is an okay means to an end for the people who want there to be no more transgender people at any cost.Social isolation and abuse is also a risk factor for mass violence. Violence against children is never ever justified. But there's a commonality between the cis-het guys who are isolated and abused until they fall into violent ideologies, and trans people who are isolated and abused until they fall into violent ideologies, and the problem isn't that they're trans. It's the isolation and the abuse and the violence.
