Me: Don't overthink it, and don't focus on just marginal changes with CWV scores... think about the overall user experience.

The first segment is live! It was great to chat with @rustybrick in Princeton about several important SEO topics. This is part one covering AI content, Bing Chat, Bard, publisher impact, citations, and more. There are several more videos that will be released, but you can check out part one today. :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14WxCTyn4gA#google #seo #bing #ai #content

Work for a news publisher and syndicating content? Heads-up. Google is now recommending to NOT use rel canonical for syndicated content on partners. They say to block indexing... And that conversation will probably NOT go well with syndication partners. via @rustybrick https://www.seroundtable.com/google-updates-canonicalization-help-documentation-35329.html#google #seo #news

Having trouble with indexing? Google's Gary Illyes reiterates in the latest Office Hours video that quality is the most important thing to focus on, which is followed by 'popularity on the web'. For the latter, social media can help as your content is shared & referenced across the web. But don't overthink that last point... Social can help get the word out, which can help with discovery, but it doesn't directly impact rankings. https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-indexing-speed-key-factors-include-quality-popularity/486243/ #google #seo #quality #content

Heads-up! The Magi leaks begin. Google Search will be changing soon, with a departure from 10 blue links -> Google plans to make search more “visual, snackable, personal, & human”, incorporating short videos, social media posts, & conversations w/AI "Search visitors might be more frequently prompted to ask follow-up questions or swipe through visuals such as TikTok videos in response to queries." And, "Google could further emphasize forum posts & short videos..."https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-search-ai-artificial-intelligence-chatbot-tiktok-67c08870?mod=djemalertNEWS#seo

And more (as expected): "At its I/O conference this week, the search giant is expected to debut new features that allow users to carry out conversations w/an artificial-intelligence program, code-named “Magi,” said others familiar w/the matter."Notice Google's focus on younger users throughout the article. This week should be very interesting with I/O announcements. :)#google #seo #ai #search

Great collection of SERP features and tests that could all come together when Google announces big search changes at I/O this week. I would add multi-source featured snippets, which could also have an AI component where you ask Bard follow-up questions. :) -> Is This What Google Search May Be Launching At I/O?https://www.seroundtable.com/google-search-may-be-launching-at-i-o-35344.html#google #seo #io #googleio #search #ai

Ouch, screening in the age of AI is critically important -> The Irish Times apologizes for running an opinion piece on May 11 that was submitted by a hoaxer who created the article using AI "The newspaper deleted the opinion piece within hours and launched a review. The statement on Sunday confirmed Ireland’s paper of record had been duped."https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/may/14/irish-times-apologises-for-hoax-ai-article-about-womens-use-of-fake-tan#google #seo #ai #content #artificialintelligence #chatgpt #openai

Part 3 with @rustybrick is out! And it's the segment where we talk about a topic near and dear to my heart. BROAD CORE UPDATES. Was great talking with Barry about how companies can be impacted, recovery from major drops, where 'Phantom' came from, where broad core updates are headed, and more. If you're interested in core updates, definitely check it out. :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrpzbLEp1s4#google #seo

Yep, I'm definitely seeing some serious movement across certain sites. One in particular is jumping up even more after surging during the 4/19 Reviews Update tremor. Very interesting. Want to know how many people are clicking links to email you from your site using GA4? -> How to Track Mailto Links in Google Analytics 4 Using Google Tag Manager (GTM) GA4 will be taking over soon. I highly recommend getting your hands dirty now. Focus on News SEO? A big heads-up -> Google launches new topic authority system to better surface news content via @rustybrick "Google now understands if a specific publication is especially relevant to topics or locations. Also re: reputation, Google can also look at the history of high-quality reporting, the recommendations from expert sources & more to see the reputation of the publication."https://searchengineland.com/google-launches-new-topic-authority-system-to-better-surface-news-content-427485#google #seo #news

And for the many SEOs that were like, "doesn't Google already do this??" Yep, they do. It's not new. They are just sharing about it now. Here is Danny's tweet about that: https://twitter.com/searchliaison/status/1661056861490102275

And regarding reputation: "Our system also looks at a source’s history of high-quality reporting, or recommendations from expert sources, such as professional societies. For example, a publication’s history doing original reporting or their journalistic awards are strong evidence of positive reputation for news websites."

And more: "Google said this should help surface content from original reporting news teams that are intimately familiar with the location & topic. Local news publications should show up more often for queries related to their local area. Publishers with a specific expertise should show up for queries on their areas of expertise."

Rely on video search traffic? Heads-up. I shared an example of a drop on Twitter, which Barry included in his post (it's also below). I also heard back from John Mueller this morning that it wasn't just a reporting issue. It apparently was an actual rankings issue -> Google Search Bug Resulted In Less Traffic To Video Content Between May 4-17 via @rustybrick https://www.seroundtable.com/google-search-console-reporting-glitch-with-video-performance-35440.html#google #seo #video

To clarify, this is not the Perspectives feature Google spoke about at I/O. This is what was originally called Perspectives in the mobile SERPs, where Google provides multiple sources for a featured snippet. It's been live on mobile for a pretty long time. Now being tested (or rolling out) on desktop. via @rustybrick If you have the featured snippet on desktop, you will need to learn to share the spotlight. :) https://www.seroundtable.com/google-search-perspectives-live-35493.html#google #seo

As @rustybrick Schwartz reported this AM, tweets are dropping out of the SERPs based on the latest changes on the platform. Search visibility is dropping, and spot-checking those rankings reveals those tweets or Twitter accounts are not ranking anymore.https://www.seroundtable.com/twitter-google-search-drop-35648.html#google #seo #twitter

@rustybrick This is based on Google not being able to crawl those urls (due to Twitter redirecting non-logged in users). When I tested those tweets or Twitter accounts via Google's testing tools, I saw a redirect error. This is for crawling, not Twitter's firehose which Google receives.#google #seo #twitter
