@nixCraft Steve Jobs was truly an asshole, but putting him in the same category as Elon Musk and Sam Altman is unwarranted.Jobs understood and cared about design, user experience, and quality in ways that no one else in the industry was willing to promote. The state of computing today would be immeasurably worse without those qualities.

@skinnylatte Probably more surprising to them would be the Japanese people who oppose nationalism and xenophobia. Don't forget, a lot of these American weebs idolize Japan and think Japan is justified in the ideals of supremacy which many Japanese people still hold.

@stefano I think the problem with BSD is that it just really doesn't have much benefit for the average end-user, compared with Linux. The BSD license is very attractive for companies looking to build proprietary systems and software on top of the BSD base. The GPL is designed to ensure that companies who build on top of free software reveal their source code, to limit the end-user's exposure to lock-in and orphan software. This is not a matter of ideology; it's a matter of practicality.

The #Fairphone is very interesting, but it’s not available in any meaningful sense in the US, one of the most lucrative markets—if not the largest market—in the world.With Google’s recent announcement that they will no longer be providing device trees for Pixel phones, my plan to switch from my now 4.5 year old 2020 iPhone SE2 to a Pixel running @GrapheneOS might be in some doubt. We need alternatives to Apple, Google, and Samsung that aren’t entirely controlled by the CCP/PRC.

@GrapheneOS I’m sorry, I did not mean to imply that the future of Graphene is in doubt, I meant my future ability to access supported hardware is in some doubt. I am hoping that if I get a Pixel 9a this year, it will remain well-supported for its useful lifespan, and 4-5 years in the future, the landscape will have changed for the better.

@GrapheneOS My original plan was to get a Pixel 8a. Now my carrier now longer even lists that model, some I guess I’m looking at a Pixel 9a. The real question is whether or not I will be able to afford to replacement my iPhone SE2 before it is no longer viable.But, TBPH, my primary beef with Apple right now is their refusal to allow me to install a proper desktop class browser and ad blocking extensions. It renders my iPhone and iPad 90% useless for my needs.

I'm going into my 5th Winter on a bicycle.I wear Lands' End Squall series waterproof insulated outerwear, a motorscooter helmet with a full face shield, waxed leather wool-lined UGG boots, and leather motorcycle gauntlets with a squeegee on one finger to clear my face shield.

@stux Don't forget that one of the reasons why women had so many pregnancies in the old days was because so many of their babies died in early childhood from infectious diseases.
