Kitchen timers have always annoyed me - there's always something about them that doesn't feel quite right. I'm working on an improved one that works how I'd like it to.The plan is to get a first prototype working and start testing it, then make a blog post. The problem with that is that I don't have a blog right now! I think there's going to be a lot of yak shaving in this project...

I'll try and summarise my problems with most kitchen timers in one post:Setting- Hour+minute often isn't granular enough- Can't decrease count without going up and wrapping round- Changing values is too slow - press+hold or mash the buttonsAlarm- Alarms are annoying when you've noticed them but can't get to them immediately!Placement- Timer always seems to be too far away, don't like having it on the counterCleaning- Depends on the timer, but often there are cracks that can collect gunk.

This was the trigger I needed to finally make my own site. I succeeded where I've previously failed by setting a deadline of getting it done this year. Well I did! Here's the blog post about the kitchen timer on my new site: https://www.gbryant.co.uk/posts/2020-12-31_kitchen-timer/post.html

Bear in mind that this is just a minimum viable product, and I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible!

I've been working some more on my kitchen timer the last few weeks. I've been using the touch screen prototype for over a year now and it's time to have something that's not glued together cardboard. So I'm doing a second prototype with some leftover keyboard switches and a small OLED screen. It's a LOT bigger than I intend the final thing to be but it's a good prototyping platform.

In the previous toot, buttons A, B, C and D are for the four adjustable presets (although B is labelled as D, hmmm). So on my working prototype I've got those set to common values that you don't want to mash buttons for, like 30 seconds, 5 minutes, etc.

Fingers crossed this print for the kitchen timer keycaps goes ok - I haven't tested the supports by printing just one, so I'm expecting something to go wrong!

@rubenwardy Yeah it's a resin printer - if you print them flat, in between supports the first layer will droop. So you end up with a surface that has lots of lumps where the supports were. This is the first time I've tried using this much of an angle so we'll see how it goes!

@urusan I used to have a variety of usernames when I was young. As a teenager I started to mostly use Luxtylo (from "lux" + "stylo") but also an anagram of my name for gaming accounts. Now I've mostly settled on gbrnt.

@piggo Have they even fixed the thing where the font keeps getting reset in a text box?

@piggo I think I've seen this before - is the actual geometry messed up (e.g. when you export to STL), or just the shading?

I like the idea of building a sort of desk shelfy thing to go over my desk. It could have a built in pegboard, lighting, webcam mount (for videoing desk) and of course storage.Does anyone know if this is an existing thing that has a name?

@piggo probably the pico? It's mega cheap and there seems to be a lot of stuff popping up around it. There might even be a pro micro compatible RP2040 board?

@joemama @Paradox It's probably not a good idea to drill into your bike's tubes! The downtube in particular has a lot of tension on it so that could easily cause it to start cracking or just catastrophically fail. Clamp-on is the way to go if there aren't already holes for it.

Started getting back into using Emacs, since org-mode is really nice for my D&D notes (as a player). I've written my first bit of lisp - a little function to roll dice in the minibuffer. My setup has 4 windows - log, threads, world and characters.Anyone else using Emacs for player/DM notes who'd like to share their setup?

Going through my notes to categorise them highlighted some details I'd completely forgotten about! That's what the threads view is for!

Does anyone know a good Mastodon instance for electronics makers or (physical object) designers or anything like that? I'd be keen on hackers.town but they're not accepting registrations.
