Kitchen timers have always annoyed me - there's always something about them that doesn't feel quite right. I'm working on an improved one that works how I'd like it to.The plan is to get a first prototype working and start testing it, then make a blog post. The problem with that is that I don't have a blog right now! I think there's going to be a lot of yak shaving in this project...

I'll try and summarise my problems with most kitchen timers in one post:Setting- Hour+minute often isn't granular enough- Can't decrease count without going up and wrapping round- Changing values is too slow - press+hold or mash the buttonsAlarm- Alarms are annoying when you've noticed them but can't get to them immediately!Placement- Timer always seems to be too far away, don't like having it on the counterCleaning- Depends on the timer, but often there are cracks that can collect gunk.

This was the trigger I needed to finally make my own site. I succeeded where I've previously failed by setting a deadline of getting it done this year. Well I did! Here's the blog post about the kitchen timer on my new site: https://www.gbryant.co.uk/posts/2020-12-31_kitchen-timer/post.html

Bear in mind that this is just a minimum viable product, and I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible!

I've been working some more on my kitchen timer the last few weeks. I've been using the touch screen prototype for over a year now and it's time to have something that's not glued together cardboard. So I'm doing a second prototype with some leftover keyboard switches and a small OLED screen. It's a LOT bigger than I intend the final thing to be but it's a good prototyping platform.

In the previous toot, buttons A, B, C and D are for the four adjustable presets (although B is labelled as D, hmmm). So on my working prototype I've got those set to common values that you don't want to mash buttons for, like 30 seconds, 5 minutes, etc.

Fingers crossed this print for the kitchen timer keycaps goes ok - I haven't tested the supports by printing just one, so I'm expecting something to go wrong!

@gbrnt Why are you printing them sideways like this? Is it a resin printer, rather than FDM?

@rubenwardy Yeah it's a resin printer - if you print them flat, in between supports the first layer will droop. So you end up with a surface that has lots of lumps where the supports were. This is the first time I've tried using this much of an angle so we'll see how it goes!
