@futurebird I don't know how those laws apply to a co op but for rentals if you have central heating the allowed temperature range for night is colder than the allowed temperature range for daytime https://www.nyc.gov/site/mayorspeu/resources/heat-season-resources.page

@futurebird I saw this post a while back and keep thinking about it when people talk about using AI for automation. If more people were literate in what level of automation already exists in the world, it might do a lot in breaking that hype cyclehttps://hachyderm.io/@mariyadelano/115548761092296218

@futurebird When our daughter asked for TV we would put on a short clip (usually Miss Rachel, Elmo, the very hungry caterpillar, etc) and queue up an episode of How It's Made to play after it.This worked super well until it didn't all of a sudden and I didn't really investigate why

@futurebird @thestrangelet This sounds a lot like my debugging ritual:1. Carefully write up the issue, everything you have tried and every detail2. Post it on an appropriate forum with "can someone help me with this? I'm out of ideas"3. Seconds you click on the post button, like half the time, the answer will come to you and you can post a reply of "nevermind, figured it out" to the inevitable frustration of everyone who comes across the post in the future.

@futurebird The main takeaway I had from the candidates was that Mamdani and Sliwa want the city to prosper (although Sliwa's ideas on what would make it prosper are wrong in the worst ways and would make it worse) while Cuomo wants Cuomo to prosper.I think I'm not the only one and Sliwa liking Mamdani more than Cuomo tells me he probably thinks that too

@futurebird Depends on how well it tickles my mental feel good parts to work on.If it's something I enjoy then 1, otherwise 4: take an indefinite break until it's almost too late then panic work on it without a break until it's done enough that I can drop it

@futurebird My 2 year old seems to be developing a bit of a New York accent and we have no idea where it comes from since neither of us has it and her teachers at daycare don't have it either.Must be something in the water.

@MisuseCase @futurebird I saw a teenager dressed like a tiefling on a train once. Horns and skin dyed pink and all.Wasn't even halloween or a convention or anything like that. Just a random day.

@futurebird I sent an angry email to Senator Gilliibrand last year when she was a cosponsor of a crypto bill and got some bullshit about how it's an opportunity that needs to be seized or something like that.Needless to say I am absolutely not giving her my vote in a primary.

@futurebird More. A cabbage planted and abandoned to dog piss is still adding a lot of the benefits of plant life. Not much was wasted as they practically grow on trees.

@futurebird There are a couple of playgrounds here which do have bathrooms but whether or not they are open is pretty hit and miss.A friend had to take their daughter to the nearest bar to use the bathroom to make sure she didn't have an accident in early potty training days.Luckily it's the kind of neighborhood place which is very ok with that but having to leave the playground to go to a bar for that is not a sign of a healthy city.

@futurebird I have seen a statistic that on average millennial dads spend almost as much time with their children as boomer moms. The roles are shifting to more equal ones whether people like it and want to go with that or not.

@futurebird And here is the article: https://news.uci.edu/2016/09/28/todays-parents-spend-more-time-with-their-kids-than-moms-and-dads-did-50-years-ago/> In 1965, mothers spent a daily average of 54 minutes on child care activities, while moms in 2012 averaged almost twice that at 104 minutes per day. Fathers’ time with children nearly quadrupled – 1965 dads spent a daily average of just 16 minutes with their kids, while today’s fathers spend about 59 minutes a day caring for them. There are a couple of interesting things here, also ties in to "why aren't people having more kids?"

@futurebird Do you know if there is a plan between the city and the teacher's union to figure out buffer days so that snow days can come back properly?

@futurebird My understanding is that the state has a minimum number of days per year, the teacher's union has limits for when the school year can start and end and the NYC board of education has a number of holidays to cover every major religion/culture in the city which means there is no slack for snow days.I don't know which one of those factors will budge or if there is a clever way around that deadlock but I sure hope so, I have not heard anyone say they're happy with remote learning
