@cpsdqs Yeah, I supposed I should have included (and... listened to. I paused to post this) the end of that sentence: "... it’s like, off-the-grid conversation that then comes out in Twitter."So I think maybe there's a component of an "online" space that these are "offline" IN RELATION TO.MaYBE??

Anyways so I got linked to this but KQED (the NPR of San Francisco) is in the middle of doing a five-part series "How Did We Get Here", on the fracturing of worker power, and the transfer of risk and instability onto workers in the US over the past hundred years,https://www.kqed.org/news/11827531/how-we-got-here-part-1-the-great-risk-shift-from-companies-to-workersand I'm only like twenty minutes in (episodes are 30-40 minutes), but every position they set themselves up to cover HOLY FRICK I didn't realize they could manage to SAY stuff like this in major news outlets?

(The "maybe we should consider labor riots?" thought wasn't in that (or it might be? I dunno, I just started), it was in a (hour-long) conversation panel about the series that I got distracted from the series itself to listen to. So less confidently asserted, more off-the-cuff unsurity (not sure if I captured that in my quoting it). But.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYSi68ueFGg )

Look I don't mean to be prescriptivist about How To Use Mastodon, fundamentally the software exists as a tool for people to use as THEY see useful for their needs, not as it "was designed to" or anything. First and foremost tools should be used by users, not by designers forcing them.BUT.I am checking https://emojos.in every time I see another new one, and WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE THE NEW INSTANCES' EMOJOS?? Why are you stealing this joy and pride from your users!?? How could you neglect this!

This is directly contrary to the best practices set out in "Home-Farmed and Wild-Caught Emojos: A Complete Guide To The Amateur Breeder". Harumph.

@aeonofdiscord Any user-editable fields displayed consistently to an audience eventually becomes at least somewhat Content, at least sometimes.(e.g. https://nox.im/posts/2021/0724/hosting-tor-hidden-services-with-vanity-onion-addresses/ )But making it clear it's specifically NOT the Primary Content -- making a specific separation -- allows it to also NOT be content, if the author doesn't want it.That's important, to give them that choice.

@aeonofdiscord It's not something you can design against. People will eventually use every possible avenue they can communicate anything in, for expression.Remember how when the Bot account tag was added on Mastodon, people IMMEDIATELY began using it to express themself? And location tags on Twitter are the vast majority of the time useless for knowing where someone is, but they'll sure tell you another thing about what they believe.Relationship markers on Facebook likewise got used for just "haha, we're friends joking with each-other"!And it's not a bug from the (intended) reader's point of view, either. It's communicative to them.

@lauren Yeah, like I don't... do webdev, nor do I do distributed systems stuff (but.. neither does he), but I really never really understood Gargron's argument against doing it differently then, and I can't say I understand it better now.

@matrix Anecdotally from having seen similar experiences with people using Mastodon like this -- AGPL doesn't STOP people from doing this (cf. Hiveway), but it does make doing it more frustrating for them and more funny for the rest if us (cf. TheJester's thing).
