Merry Chenmas!My gift to myself this year was the ever elusive Abraxas from Perennial Brewing (makers of the dangerously sleepy Saison de Lis). If you see this bottle (it comes in various forms) at your local liquor store, grab it. Do not ask questions. Do as you are told.I prefer the non-coffee version as the added bitter notes are just a distraction from the lovely floral touches care of the ancho chilis but this bottle was all they had. If you are confused by the presence of chilis in a stout imperial, I encourage you to go to your local Mexican restaurant and order anything with mole sauce.Yes, there is a hint of spice but even more of cinnamon. This brew is warm and weird on the tongue in all the right ways, with a toasty finish to remind you it's still a stout. Enjoy with your shikigami on a wintry eve in front of the fire or the soft glow of your PC's RGBs.

FRENCH AS FUCK (FAF) CREAM OF CHICKEN SOUPHOW DID WE GET HERESaturday morning a woke with a festive hangover that lingered too long. By afternoon the dreadful realization manifest: it was a fever! Grandfather Nurgle shared his Christmas blessings and I was sick, on my day off no less!It so happened my refrigerator was all but empty. Dressing up my last egg in the finest grilled ham & cheese finery I set out to finish my coffee. Later, I endeavored to the grocer on a quest to rid myself of these seasonal sniffles!A STUDY AND AN ADVENTUREBoiled chicken, that's the trick! Such was my thesis but in my fevered state I envisioned the myriad forms chicken soup may take. No seriously I was researching which canned soups and their textured vegetable protein to determine the optimal solution in case the sickness saps me of my will to cook.But then I considered the corollary. No clear vision in mind I raced to gather the holy trinity of soup, the mirepoix, or carrots, onions, and celery for you Philippines. Nay! Not onion! For my studies revealed the deleterious effect of oxalate dumping and steered me to the fever friendlier shallot.MISTAKES INTO MIRACLESTwo boxes of stock and a package of chicken thighs (on sale for $2.99/lbs no less!) later, the thought began to take form. I would make coq au vin because that shit is tight but then I forgot to go the liquor store!Weren't expecting that turn of events? Be glad they happened for I was forced to consult my pantry! Last night was a disaster of undercooked chicken and overcooked soup (you know it's bad when you end up with clarified cream) but it still tasted good. Tonight was better.Behold, my French AF cream of chicken soup!

Val-Dieu Grand CruGallic for THEBESTTHEBESTTHEBEST, Grand Cru is usually reserved for poncy Burgundies, but here it describes a "Trappist" ale without the trappings of the monastery. I realize the EU takes their naming conventions very seriously, although in this case it was the monks abandoning the abbey. Secular France kept the beer but ditched the Christianity in case that informs your choice of tippel.Very dark in colour, but still somehow golden. Not sure how they do that. More malty than your typical Trappist, which I appreciate. Really rounds things out nicely. Still boozy as hell but manageable. Think a quadruppel with body. Moderately priced which was surprising. I thought we were tariffing the Hel out of those Celtic swine. A whiff of spice, enough to be accounted for. 4/5 would recommend if you can tolerate the Belgae, who have been hated since Caesar's time.

@mebigbrain@poa.st Genre fiction exists because getting any traction as a writer is nigh impossible. By nailing your work to the mast of an established universe, its fans will at least give you a hearing. I say this as someone who has written his own novel who happens to be childhood friends with an NYU literature professor who has written two of his own. Now mine was self-published and self-marketed which went as well as you'd expect but he's been published in McSweeney's and hasn't fared much better.
