What are some of the best arguments you have used to convince people to use #freesoftware, the #fediverse, #gnulinux, #xmpp, #matrix or any other freedom-respecting tech?Curious because I want to get better at convincing 😅

@Gux the conversation often goes: "why don't you use CLOSEDPLATFORM like everyone else?"To which I answer "I use FREEPLATFORM because ..."It usually happens when I want to exchange contact details with someone and we need to find something that works for both parties. So it's not exactly walking up to strangers and telling them "Use X it's better!" but arises in the conversation

@JF Isn't this the build that was featured on the pine64 blog recently? How is the server doing now, can I ask what distro you are using and if it's on a mainline kernel?

@JF very cool. I didn't realise it was you who wrote it 😄I have a rockpro64 which I recently got second hand. But the SOC in the quartz64 doesn't do any speculative execution interestingly, contrary to the rk3399 in the rockpro64.Out of curiosity, how much system resources is your matrix homeserver using? And kudos for running a Tor Snowflake!

@martijnbraam sounds right up my alley! Added to my watchlist 😊As someone who sees the value in having real Linux on phones, but doesn't have a developer background, I wonder how far/close the "daily driver" Linux phone is.What first got me annoyed with (de-googled) Android is that I can't just easily do "Borg backup" or rsync all my photos to another machine. On the other scale of fancy features, having a convergent phone still makes me drool.

#askfedi #switzerland #law #work #fingerprintStarted a new job and authentication to the building is done exclusively with fingerprints, without any other option. I felt very uncomfortable having my fingerprints scanned. Does anyone know if the law has anything to say about this?

Thanks for the boosts everyone, I'm going to continue this thread in English. These two links mostly for my future reference:https://droitdutravailensuisse.com/2021/08/10/droit-suisse-de-la-protection-des-donnees-definitions/a blog which talks about labour laws in switzerland. Mentions some texts that may be relevanthttps://www.cnil.fr/fr/le-controle-dacces-biometrique-sur-les-lieux-de-travailRelevant for France. It would seem that using fingerprints for authentication needs to be justified, and a card reader used otherwise. Not clear whether it's legally binding

@freemo @kaip @ademalsasa I think what was meant was something like "custom domain email hosting but for mastodon"As a domain owner you can have an MX record that says domain1.tld handles your email. You can then change that any time you want to domain2.tld, but your users don't even notice the difference and see the same address: username@yourdomain.tld

This blog post by #matrix contains several points that entrench my opinion. This is not the chat protocol that will give us regular people freedom, privacy and self determination. They complain that others have taken their #Apache licensed code and developed proprietary extensions on top. They should have used #GPL and #AGPL instead. They likely didn't because of VC funding pressure. Apache means they can close source it and start charging whenever.

They are spending $400k monthly, and the best desktop app you get is bloated Electron garbage. That is a huge amount of capital, making it unlikely the community could take over development and therefore making Element "too big to fail", increasing lock-in opportunites.https://matrix.org/blog/2022/12/01/funding-matrix-via-the-matrix-org-foundation/

Cool things to do with a #linuxphone Run #ansible deployment scripts directly from your phone.Run automatic backups with #borg or #rsync directly over SSH. You could use the same backup system for your phone as for your desktop, laptop and server(s)Run some of the same apps on your phone and computer. Same web browser, feed reader, mastodon client

@amolith completely agree.I've seen a lot of people with the same endless list of notifications you mention. When I think about my case, there is only one service that sends me notifications, and that's instant messaging. Everything else can wait
