@whitequark That iPhone "feature" where it muffles the audio when you zoom in while recording is actually an open standard, and Firefox is simply implementing it on all playback. Why do you hate interoperability?

@foone Do you have archives of your old teardowns on the hellsite? I just came across this weird Microtest motherboard I bought off eBay years ago, after you reverse engineered one and got it working, thinking it would be an interesting challenge (and then promptly forgot about it).

I ordered six items from Amazon and they listed early morning delivery, and this is what arrived.Keen viewers will notice there are only five packages there, so did they actually combine two items? Nope, one item is missing.

@foone Today I was looking at two LG monitors which looked to have identical specs, so I googled "model1 vs model2", and it gave me incorrect information for two completely different models.

@foone If it helps for reference, I once wrote a Wireshark lua dissector for 2ping, a low-level UDP protocol. Though as a warning, I haven't looked at it in about a decade, so it may not even work anymore.https://github.com/rfinnie/2ping/tree/main/wireshark

@foone The GP2040-CE is an open USB gamepad input encoder design. It's got a button on the PCB which turns it into a USB flash drive (because it's based on the RP2040, so that's not new). It's got another button which turns it into a USB ethernet adapter to give you access to a configuration web site.

@foone See how many USB classes you can emulate in one device. Hold down another button and your keyboard turns into an HID mouse which is controlled Asteroids style by the keyboard. Hold yet another button and it becomes a webcam which displays abstract animations depending on the keyboard inputs. Etc, etc.

@foone Jump Script, which actually has nothing to do with the original Jump instruction, but was given the Jump name for marketing purposes.

@foone Last year I coined the term "level shifter of shame" in response to yet another "don't worry, it's tolerant of 3.3v" being not. https://fosstodon.org/@foo/113506886456561426

@maj I remember when they were small enough that I emailed them and asked for a representative sample of tweets to train my crazy Markov bot (X11R5), and they were like "no problem, here's an entire day of tweets". (It just happened to be Canada Day, so my bot was distinctly Canadian after that.)

@foone Reminds me of the fact that I lived in the Bay Area for about 2 years, then moved to Nevada for 20 years, then moved to SoCal in 2021.I was still in the CA DMV's system, so rather than needing to re-take tests to get a license, they treated it as a renewal with a 20 year gap. Still had the same DL ID.

@futurebird The Southwest US equivalent is the *berto's. Mexican fast food, always named Alberto's, Roberto's, Filiberto's, etc. Sometimes two of the same name will be owned by the same owner, sometimes they're completely unrelated. Yet they always have the exact same menu.

If your company's headphones advertise 20 hours of battery life but start saying "battery low" every minute after 20% left, then your headphones have 16 hours of battery life.
