@futurebird @funnymonkey their talking points made more sense when I realized they think public schools should fulfill the same role in society as prisons. Cutting school lunches, arming teachers, child labor laws, everything

@futurebird Thinking about the time that Ocasio-Cortez organized the opposition to Amazon HQ in Queens and all the Dem leadership could do was harangue her about “the 25,000 jobs”

@futurebird similarly: the practice of faux-painting was to paint architectural features made of cheap materials to look like more expensive ones, like mahogany or marble. But at a certain point, the original materials became cheaper, so the practice became more exaggerated and obvious, to show the extra money spent on an artisan to do the paintingIt’s the same thing with designer fashion and expensive wine: you don’t pay for the product, you pay for the price tagIt’s all flexes. Always has beenhttps://www.nps.gov/articles/faux-painting-and-the-columns-of-arlington-house.htm

@futurebird the two i’s are two separate syllables. I’m going to remember this by looking for the two dots next to each other and treating them as a diaeresis like iïsin-eeVs.sun-e-ee

@clacke it’s kind of amazing that forty years later we have a new tool to add to the coreutils boxMaybe there’s something out there that fills this gap, but it bugs me that jq tends to be embedded as a string in shell scripts or YAML the way that awk is embedded in shell scripts or shell scripts get embedded in YAML and then the tooling isn’t there to check it: a hole where bugs can sneak in. How do you handle these cases?

@clacke I’ll typically do that for shell scriptt, I put them in separate files so I can run spellcheck against them, I can also ensure that ‘set -e’ is the case for what it does. I’m sure there’s a way to run jq/awk checks on shell strings in YAML but that’s another layer to check, or could run ci to build my ci config, but down that path lies madness, dawg

@futurebird the historical Patton had a much higher pitched voice than George C. Scott; part of the personality was in the neighborhood of small guy syndromeAlso, I think Omar Bradley, who had no love lost for Patton, was the technical consultant for the film and so it played up the crazy. But dudes saw it and thought that was great, much like how a lot of dudes think that Col. Jessup did nothing wrong in A Few Good MenLife imitates art (derogatory)
