@Coyote In that case: do you really look for a replacement? Why would a replacement not suffer from the exact same issues that you "can't stand"? If I read your comment correct, you don't want to use LinkedIn, but do want the "rolodex" feature? In that case: would a "fediversed addressbook" (or such, whatever that exactly is) be more what you need than "a professional social network"?

@Coyote You are the first (and only person) to confirm my initial goal for Flockingbird though: "a selfhostable rolodex on steroids."We found out (the hard way) that LinkedIn is a very different solution to very different problems depending on who you ask. "Professional social networking" is broader than anticipated. So we still don't know for certain "what to build first".(well, based on feedback: a place to find jobs and show that you are #forhire), which is why the first goal is @hunter2

We've stabilized and re-deployed the job-offer and job-candidate bot for the Fediverse.🚀 https://search.flockingbird.social/Please bear with us while we monitor and improve the bot and indexing service. It will crash. It will get things wrong.

We are aware that it can and should be improved. A lot. The hard part is not seeing what can be done better, not even in actually doing it. But in prioritizing what should be improved first. So please! By all means let us know what you think sucks, needs work, can be done better or withholds you from using the job-search.Better even: make that a ticket: https://github.com/Flockingbird/hunter2/issues. And best, obviously: make it a PR. The webpage is just plain HTML & vanilla JS. entry level. The bot is rust; sorry.

Apparently I suck at copy-pasting. Or maybe the mastodon web-client, or maybe Firefox. But probably me.Should've been this gif.

Hey frontend webdevs, looking for some advise:For our search page, we're quickly running against the limits of a simple single HTML page with vanilla CSS and JS embedded.Moving to a framework or other setup seems apt. What should we use? (boosts appreciated, replies or questions even more so)

@doctormo it's meilisearch: https://www.meilisearch.com/Our source code for the job search is disgracefully badly documented, but if you're interested, can be found here: https://github.com/Flockingbird/hunter2/

@doctormo also, the live index runs at meili.flockingbird.social. You'll need auth tokens, if you want to play with it. You can find a (read-only, limited) set in the source of the webpage ...

@epic @doctormo Sorry for making it appear I find meilisearch badly documented. It's exceptionally well documented. Clear, to the point, with lots of detail if wanted. Meilisearch is a showcase of how well OpenSource can be done. No, hunter2, the bot and job search is poorly documented. It's also OpenSource though I see now, we should clarify that on the readme.

🏗️ Help needed! We need someone to consult on "text recognition". #AI, #dataanalysis, #BERT, etc. Especially the pro's and cons for our specific use-case:We need a "job or not" recognition-thing that takes a toot, and produces a flag (or score) whether it is a job-posting, a vacancy. To improve the fediverse job search tool https://search.flockingbird.social/, which now includes false positives. We want to reduce those.PM us, mail to hi-at-flockingbird.social or reply 👇 if you'd like to help!

We've re-done the Job-search page a little. So that you can share links with others. E.g. looking for remote jobs regarding "linux"? Here they are:https://search.flockingbird.social/?q=linux&tags=remotework

@devSJR @mado @feditips Indeed. Rather than building a large, and unknown product, we decided to tackle the most pressing problems first. Top1 being that people want to find jobs. So we released a job-search page, that indexes all job-postings on the #fediverse: https://search.flockingbird.social/The source-code, issues, todos etc are, as @feditips pointed out below, at https://github.com/Flockingbird/hunter2/

Moin, Fediverse! What would be a good place to market the fediverse job search engine? Any Wikis? Awesome-lists? Forums? Let us know 👇 Irony is that https://search.flockingbird.social/ gets most of its traffic from LinkedIn and Twitter. We can change that, can't we, fediverse? (If you don't know any, please boost your friends probably know some good options)

Almost half of the people in the poll https://fosstodon.org/web/@flockingbird/109267966348228503 answered that they would not join a "professional social network". Would love to know some reasons why not (or maybe we designed the poll wrong, idk). Feel free to DM if you feel unconfortable explaining in the open.

Our job bot, @hunter2 is having some trouble. The bot slipped on a bug.Job postings are still grabbed once a day, but no longer realtime. We'll fix this coming weekend. Sorry.

We are looking for a person who can research and implement a model (AI, BERT, etc) or filter (bayesian etc) or some other tech to determine if a toot is a job posting or not.So that we can index jobs, posted to the fediverse more reliably. And avoid indexing the wrong toots. Better results, better privacy!Interested? DM or reply. #vacancy Students, juniors, seniors, never-touched-ai-but-eager-to-learn: anyone is welcome. You probably know more than we do.Tech stack to be determined.
