@SuperDicq tbh i partially agree with him. sure, he should probably curate his follows better and use filters and lists, but at the same time i can see why a user-specific trending[1] tab can be useful. it’s not like it’d be the default anyway. imo on twitter it’s bad mostly because it’s a black box forced on users.[1]: or some other “””algorithm””” such as interspersing posts from different users or ranking by frecency of replies. choice is good.

@mer @mario @katkatThat’s why I stopped eating cephalopods entirely, there is no way to quickly kill them without causing them undue pain.Wait, really? Source? I might stop eating them as well then

WTF I just discovered that notifications to the owner of #Github forks are disabled by default! I know that “forks” on github are mostly used for contributing upstream and not… well… for forking, but this made me miss notifications on actual forks!

This also explains why owners of active forks of dead projects aren’t replying to my PRs

This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. #Tcl would be a really good #NixOS builder language.Incredibly portableEasily bootstrappableLike bash but without many of its pitfallsLike lisp but with an arguably cleaner and more familiar syntaxThere are also disadvantages, but you can probably count on one hand programming languages that are suited for the task.@wamsermaRE: https://cdrom.tokyo/objects/6c88a7dc-52bd-4481-879d-78e34dc58b14

@bortzmeyer @solene it's purely luck-based. I also have little problem sending to gmail and many problems sending to outlook, but I've seen other people get the opposite or any combination

@sisukasvelho Hi, thanks for letting me know. That’s weird, as far as I can tell there should be no reason for a block: this instance is very friendly and diverse; shitposters here keep to themselves and their circles and don’t go around harassing people. This happened a couple other times, but I think it was either in error or inherited from other instances without properly checking, because we got unblocked as soon as someone asked. If you end up investigating I’d appreciate if you let me know what you find. I think I was followed by a couple other people from there…

I somehow managed to accidentally delete /dev/null and it’s unbelievable how much stuff relies on writing data to nothing.SSH just doesn’t startsame with tmuxbash completion doesn’t work and spams errors about _upvarsI can’t open GUI programs unless I launch them from a terminal that was opened when /dev/null was still thereFirefox prints assertion failures, then the error handler segfaults (!!)

@duponin Apparently, when told to write to an existing file, some programs don’t write over that file, but instead choose to remove and replace it :blobcatgooglyshrug:

Like… I know it’s required by POSIX, and it’s helpful in scripts, but how is it possible that standalone programs rely on it instead of just… not producing that data.Just how much data gets produced and the immediately thrown away into /dev/null at any given moment?

But wait, that was a regular file! A file that can be overwritten (and reset to 0 bytes) by multiple processes, so it could be that I just didn’t see the data in time.So I tried to make it a FIFO… forgetting that FIFOs are blocking until a reader is set up. My shell instantly locked up, and so did the most random parts of the system

@besserwisser @mer @SuperDicq @Moon It was Dominos. I tried their “pepperoni” pizza once (not in Italy) and the best way I can describe it is that it tasted like arbre magique. The reason they failed though is not because of taste (or at least not primarily). As many italian branches of foreign fast food chains do, they used better ingredients than in other countries. Local pizza places just made cheaper and better pizza, and with the pandemic they enhanced their delivery, so dominos didn’t have anything going for it anymore.https://www.ilpost.it/2022/08/10/chiusura-dominos-pizza-italia-fallimento-franchising/
