@nina I have very cowardly abstained since I don't know what the blowback will be for those who signed it. The FSF doesn't carry the same prominence it did in the 80s and 90s, but it's still an issue I'm keenly watching just out of principle.

@nina I've wondered about this! At a societal level, there's definitely a clear value in having people present themselves (in public) as a simplified version of themselves.I can't remember the precise number, but we've got room in our minds to have meaningful, complex relationships with about 100 or so people. Anything beyond that and we need to start seeing people simplified. It eases things psychologically if there's some polite fiction to just see someone in a pleasantly iconic form, just "gentleman" or "lady" or "cashier", with all of their rough edges hidden away from us.At a personal level...even for people that you have a close and intimate relationship, there's still a little bit of shame and pretending to be someone easier to deal with than you really are, even if it's to a lesser degree. It's tough because there are obvious downsides to this (you can't go through life comparing yourself to everyone else's social mask), but I still think there's value to it somehow.

@tdemin I might investigate setting up an Android build environment and seeing if I can easily remove the features I don't want

It really bothers me when us lowly consumers select for tricky/dishonest business. 3 examples:1. Instead of charging a delivery fee that honestly reflects the cost of delivery, stores/sites now jack up their prices and offer "free (lol) delivery" after a certain threshold.2. Instead of paying for online services, we get "free" (lol) services, who then sell our information to advertisers. Or, better yet, force us to download a spyware app.3. Kiddo and I went to an "aquarium cafe" which, of course, has substantial costs with maintaining the fish. They offer "free" (lol) admission, but require you to buy food and drinks, which are about 2x the usual cost. The most annoying part of it is that we, the consumers, are demanding this trickery. It's not as if there are idiots out there like "gee I wonder how they can afford free shipping": we KNOW they're jacking up all the prices. But if a business forewent this trickery and charged an honest delivery fee, they would fail.

I have 1 free spot in my class starting next week, and 46 students on the waiting list. The system does not show me the order in which they applied for the waiting list.It shows me: what year/semester they're in, whether they have taken (failed) the course before, what program/major they're in, and the other courses they're enrolled in.What's the fairest way to choose who gets in the course? I've been thinking about it for an hour, but it seems an intractible problem.

Pro-tip: if you use the DOM Inspector in your browser to copy the HTML source for a <table> and then save that HTML source in a file with an .xls extension and open it in LibreOffice Calc or Excel, it will actually open it correctly and allow you to save as a CSV.This is useful in case your organization's enterprise software doesn't allow you to export data Jesus Fucking Christ what century are we even in fuck

@nina I coincidentally lived in the most conservative city in Canada when I was at my leftist. Aside from cashiers, bus drivers, etc., starting up conversations about Jesus out of nowhere, it was pretty much as you describe. Friendly and neighbourly, but live and let live.

I swear half the time I spend writing Haskell is just going back and forth on whether $ or ( ) is more readable in a particular expression.

Student: My math exam conflicts with this class's exam.Me: Hmm, that's weird. That's not what the exam schedule says. Let me check with your professor. What's your math professor's name?Student: Kim Jong UnI emailed him and it's true. The math professor's name coincidentally IS exactly the same as the North Korean dictator's. One of the unexpected joys of working at a Korean university.AND the student was right: the exam schedule is wrong :(

My performance in chess puzzles, as taken from lichess.org. The part shaded in pink is when I had a cold (the point at which I "no longer have a cold" is not really a sharp line, so I made it kind of fade out).I thought it was cool that I can visually see the effects of a cold on my ability to think.
